Newborn girls have a small amount of vaginal bleeding a few days after birth. This is because a sudden drop in estrogen from the mother causes withdrawal bleeding, which usually stops on its own within a few days. Vaginal bleeding in early childhood and after menopause should be considered as a malignancy. Vaginal bleeding in adolescent girls is often functional uterine bleeding. Vaginal bleeding in women of childbearing age should be considered to be related to pregnancy.
