Diagnostic criteria for abdominal obesity

Diagnostic criteria for abdominal obesity

In daily life, we can see many people with fat bodies. In fact, there are many types of fat, and the basis of classification is the different parts of their fat bodies. Some people have abdomens as big as apples, some are narrow at the top and wide at the bottom like pears, and some are fat from head to toe. Among them, abdominal obesity with an apple-like abdomen is the most worthy of attention. It is also called "apple-shaped obesity" because of its shape.

Definition of abdominal obesity

He has long limbs and is of normal weight, but he has a big belly and his waist is too big, even larger than his hips. This body shape looks like an "apple" in appearance and is also vividly called apple-shaped obesity. Apple-shaped obesity is actually called abdominal obesity or central obesity, which means that fat is mainly deposited in the abdominal cavity, which manifests as an increase in waist circumference.

Diagnostic criteria for abdominal obesity

BMI (weight/square of height) and waist circumference are both simple anthropometric indicators for assessing obesity. However, people often use BMI to measure the degree of obesity, thus ignoring the role of increased waist circumference in indicating health risks. Abdominal obesity is defined as a waist circumference of 90 cm or more for men and 85 cm or more for women.

The dangers of abdominal obesity

Abdominal obesity can also be said to be intra-abdominal obesity. The fat in the abdominal cavity is very different from subcutaneous fat. It is more harmful and releases more harmful factors than subcutaneous fat. It is more likely to cause people to suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, cholelithiasis, hyperuricemia and other diseases, so the harm is more serious.

Sedentary white-collar workers are at high risk of abdominal obesity

Sedentary habits are a health risk factor that has gradually received attention in research in recent years, because sitting for long periods of time can more easily lead to an increase in waist circumference. Our research confirms that sedentary habits can increase the risk of diabetes and hypertension, and regular physical exercise can reduce the risk of these chronic diseases, but the prerequisite is that waist circumference drops to normal levels. Otherwise, improvements in lifestyle will hardly significantly reduce the risk of diseases caused by abdominal obesity.

Sedentary habits and lack of physical activity are two different concepts. People with sedentary habits may not lack physical activity. For example, due to the needs of their jobs, many people are in a sitting position during work, such as long-distance bus drivers, office typists, etc. Although these people can use the time after get off work to do moderate physical exercise, this cannot completely make up for the harm caused to the body by long periods of sitting during the day, especially the gradual accumulation of abdominal fat.
