What are the effects of rhinitis in pregnant women on the fetus?

During pregnancy, most of the body becomes very fragile, increasing the incidence of some diseases. Some pregnant women will suffer from rhinitis, in which case patients will experience increased nasal discharge, blocked nostrils, etc. In severe cases, pregnant women must breathe through their mouths, which will naturally cause dry mouth and tongue and reduce the quality of their sleep. So what are the effects of rhinitis in pregnant women on the health of the fetus?

Does rhinitis in pregnant women affect the fetus?

1. It can easily cause intrauterine hypoxia : prolonged severe nasal congestion may cause fetal intrauterine hypoxia, which is extremely detrimental to the development of the fetus. However, most pregnant women do not need to worry. In most cases, the body's physiological functions will remind you to change your breathing method, such as being awakened by difficulty breathing or switching to mouth breathing.

2. Improper use of medication leads to unpredictable consequences : If a pregnant woman suffers from rhinitis and takes medication improperly, the consequences are unpredictable. Because most of the current drugs for treating rhinitis contain ephedrine, if pregnant women take these drugs, the drugs will pass through the placenta into the fetus, which may cause miscarriage or lead to fetal malformations. If the nasal congestion is particularly severe, you can use some 1% ephedrine solution for 3 to 5 days, but it cannot be used for a long time.

3. If rhinitis is not treated in time, it can also cause nasal concha hypertrophy, nasal polyps and sinusitis, leading to dizziness, headache, nightmares, memory loss, neurasthenia, and even long-term low fever, which seriously affects the quality of life of the pregnant mother.

What to do if pregnant women have rhinitis

1. Nasal drops. If you experience common rhinitis symptoms such as nasal congestion and runny nose during pregnancy, your doctor will usually use local vasoconstrictors to relieve your symptoms. Ephedrine nasal drops are the first choice, but they should not be used for a long time, generally not more than 3 to 5 days, to avoid drug dependence.

2. Anti-inflammatory drugs. If you have purulent nasal discharge, you need to use anti-inflammatory drugs. Do not avoid seeing a doctor. The doctor will choose drugs that are safe for pregnant women based on your condition.

3. Spray. When conventional treatment is ineffective, after clearing nasal secretions, nasal sprays such as perclomethasone propionate aerosol and beclomethasone aerosol can be used. When symptoms are severe, submucosal injection of drugs such as long-acting triamcinolone acetonide can be used.

4. Wash your nose with salt water. Nasal irrigation with saline to treat rhinitis is a new rhinitis treatment method that has been highly praised in Europe and the United States in recent years. Saline nasal wash therapy is actually the result of making full use of human physiology. It thoroughly rinses the nasal cavity by using appropriate tools.
