Why do my breasts feel like they are pricking when I'm breastfeeding?

Many mothers experience a tingling sensation in their breasts when breastfeeding. This is mostly caused by blocked milk ducts, while a few may also be caused by inflammation, lumps, etc. When the breasts feel like they are being pricked by needles while breastfeeding, it is important to accurately identify the triggering factor and resolve it. Mothers can look for causes from milk congestion, emotional factors, feeding posture, etc. If the stinging pain is obvious or the swelling pain is unbearable, you should seek medical attention immediately.

1. Milk stasis

During breastfeeding, breast engorgement often occurs, so you should try to empty the milk as much as possible during breastfeeding. If the baby cannot completely suck out the milk during each breastfeeding, you should use a breast pump to suck it out to avoid milk stasis and breast pain. Otherwise, it is easy to cause bacterial infection and lead to acute mastitis.

2. Mental stimulation

During breastfeeding, you should maintain a good mental state to avoid various mental stimulations and negative emotions that may cause poor milk secretion and excretion, leading to breast pain. Therefore, you should maintain a happy mood, have a good life routine, and get enough sleep.

3. The feeding position is the same

If the feeding position is the same, the baby may bite the nipple, causing nipple cracks, or suck too much milk, causing breast pain. Therefore, when breastfeeding, feed alternately on both sides to avoid breast asymmetry caused by feeding one side too much.

4. The bra is not suitable

A well-fitting bra with good support can help relieve breast tenderness. Try a maternity bra or a larger sports bra - these seem to allow the breasts to breathe better and feel more comfortable. Cotton bras are used because they can prevent fiber dust particles from chemical fiber fabrics from entering the mammary ducts, thereby avoiding the resulting milk secretion and excretion disorders.
