What should pregnant women do if they have diarrhea? Will it affect the fetus?

During pregnancy, due to poor care of daily diet, it is easy to cause diarrhea. In fact, diarrhea does have an impact on the baby. In mild cases, it affects the baby's absorption of nutrients, and in severe cases, it may even cause miscarriage. The following is an introduction.

Diarrhea is also called loose stool. It generally has three characteristics: the frequency of bowel movements increases significantly; the stool becomes thinner, and its shape, color, and odor change, containing pus, blood, mucus, undigested food, fat, or becomes yellow watery, green paste, and has a sour and smelly odor; there are symptoms such as abdominal pain, prolapse, tenesmus, and burning pain in the anus during bowel movements.

Pregnant women can also suffer from diarrhea like ordinary people. The most common cause of diarrhea in pregnant women is intestinal infection, which is mostly caused by unclean food. Especially in the first three months of pregnancy, diarrhea must be taken seriously. The cleanliness of food must be strictly controlled.

Diarrhea in pregnant women will affect the baby. First of all, when pregnant women have diarrhea, if it happens too frequently, the body's water and electrolytes, especially potassium ions, will be lost in large quantities, and the pregnant women will become dehydrated. At the same time, this will directly affect the fetus's absorption of nutrients, causing fetal malnutrition.

Secondly, when pregnant women have diarrhea, their intestinal peristalsis will speed up, and they will also experience intestinal cramps and bloating, which will stimulate uterine contractions and easily cause miscarriage. Therefore, if a pregnant woman has diarrhea, she must always pay attention to the fetal movement, observe for signs of miscarriage or premature birth, and go to the hospital in time.

In general, diarrhea in pregnant women poses a great threat to the health of the baby, so when diarrhea occurs, you must not blindly take some antidiarrhea drugs, because most drugs will have a certain impact on the normal development of the fetus, and even cause fetal malformations.
