How long does it take for breast milk to become sour in the body?

Breast milk is the most natural, safest and most complete natural food for infant growth. It is the most important source of nutrients for newborns in the early stage of birth. Therefore, every mother tries her best to feed her child with breast milk. Therefore, many mothers try their best to choose breastfeeding. Some mothers almost gave up because of mastitis and nipple chappedness during the confinement period, but for the healthy growth of their babies, they still gritted their teeth and persevered. Sometimes you even worry about how long the milk will become sour and smelly in the body.

How long does it take for breast milk to become sour and smelly in the body?

No matter how long the milk stays in the body, it will not produce a sour smell. There is no time limit for the milk to be excreted from the body. Because of the pregnant mother's blood circulation and metabolism, the milk will not become moldy. If the storage of milk after being expressed is time-limited, it can be stored at room temperature not exceeding 30 degrees for four hours, in the refrigerator for 48 hours, and at minus 5 degrees Celsius to minus 15 degrees Celsius for half a year. However, before the baby drinks milk, the milk must be washed with warm water, not exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. It cannot be exposed to fire or the temperature is too high, which will be detrimental to the nutritional elements of the milk.

Storage of milk

There are generally several options for storing breast milk: warming, freezing or refrigerating. The actual storage method also depends on when your baby drinks. If it is a deep freezer, the temperature is maintained below 0°C and the door is not opened or closed frequently, the shelf life of breast milk can be as short as 6 months or more (unless there are special circumstances, it is recommended not to store it for such a long time).

1. Consume within 4 hours

Generally, under room temperature conditions (about 25°C), milk can be stored for about 4 hours. If you can be sure that your baby can drink milk mechanically within 4 hours, you can choose to store it at room temperature.

2. Consume within 12 hours

If the baby eats it within 12 hours, the milk can be stored in the refrigerator. Studies have shown that milk can be stored for 48-72 hours when frozen at around 4°C. However, the household freezer cannot maintain a temperature of 4°C. Since the refrigerator can be turned on and off repeatedly, it is recommended not to exceed 12 hours. If the family economy allows and milk is often stored, it is best to buy a refrigerator that specializes in storing milk.

3. Short-term ingestion (3-6 months)

If there is a large amount of breast milk stored and some of it is not consumed for a short period of time, it can be refrigerated. Generally, under the refrigeration standard of minus 18 degrees Celsius, milk can be stored for 3-6 months.

Breast milk storage FAQs

1. The milk in the refrigerator should be placed as far away from the refrigerator door as possible and close to the inside. This can not only ensure the lowest temperature, but also reduce the impact of opening and closing the refrigerator door on the temperature.

2. When using refrigerated milk, it is recommended to use it in order of priority, that is, give priority to milk that was used earlier.

3. It is best to store it separately from other things to avoid environmental pollution.

4. Breast milk can only be thawed once, so each milk storage bag is best to store the amount for the baby to consume once, and the milk that has been thawed cannot be refrigerated again.

In addition to calculating based on the storage time, mothers can generally judge whether the milk is moldy by their own taste. For frozen milk, if the color of the breast milk becomes darker and there are some suspended matter in it after thawing and warming up, it means that it has gone moldy and can no longer be given to the baby. If the mother is really unsure whether it is moldy or not, please try not to let the baby take it to avoid accidents.
