Picture of yellow color in the late stage of lochia

Postpartum lochia is a normal condition for pregnant women after giving birth. After giving birth, the uterine decidua falls off, and tissues containing blood, necrotic decidua and other tissues are discharged through the vagina, which is postpartum lochia. Postpartum lochia usually has a fishy smell that is not a peculiar smell, and the color of postpartum lochia also changes with time. Some pregnant women may find that the color of their lochia turns yellow, and they may worry whether there is something wrong with their body. What exactly does it mean when the color of lochia turns yellow after delivery?

The different stages of maternal lochia color

Postpartum lochia generally lasts for 4 to 6 weeks, during which time the content and color of the lochia change. The discharge of postpartum lochia will go through three stages:

The first stage is 3-6 days after giving birth. Because the lochia contains more blood, it is bright red and is called stubborn lochia.

The second stage is 7-14 days after childbirth. During this period, the lochia contains less blood and is mainly composed of necrotic decidual tissue and mucus, so it is light pink and is called serous lochia.

The third stage is 2-3 weeks after giving birth. The lochia contains a lot of white blood cells, epidermal cells and some decidual tissue, and is milky white, which is called white lochia.

The yellowing of lochia is actually a change between the second and third stages of postpartum lochia discharge, so mothers don't need to worry.

Issues that postpartum women should pay attention to when having lochia

In addition to paying attention to the tone of the heart, pregnant women should pay more attention to the time when lochia is discharged. If the normal lochia period is over, but the lochia still does not stop and is accompanied by symptoms such as lower back pain and abdominal pain, it is likely to be a uterine infection problem. At this time, you should go to the hospital immediately to find out the details.

Postpartum lochia is a physiological condition of the human body, and mothers do not need to worry too much. It should be noted that it takes some time for the uterus to recover after giving birth. In order to prevent bacteria from infecting the uterus through the cervix and vagina, during the period of lochia discharge after delivery, you must pay attention to the daily cleaning of the private parts, change underwear frequently, and keep the private parts clean and dry.
