Will catching a cold while breastfeeding cause milk to dry up?

Will catching a cold while breastfeeding cause milk to dry up? Many mothers will worry about many problems when they catch a cold during breastfeeding, such as whether the cold will cause milk dry up. If milk dry up, it means that the baby has no breast milk to drink. So will a cold during breastfeeding cause milk dry up?

1. A cold during lactation generally does not cause milk to stop flowing

A cold during breastfeeding will only make the mother feel uncomfortable. Generally, it will not affect breastfeeding, cause milk dryness, or affect milk supply.

Notice:

Although catching a cold during breastfeeding generally does not cause milk dryness, if mothers stop breastfeeding during the cold period, they need to express the milk by hand or with a breast pump, and make sure to do it more than 3 times a day, otherwise milk will accumulate and dryness will occur.

Manual milking method:

First, use the six-step hand washing method to wash your hands thoroughly, prepare a small bowl for collecting milk, a milk remover and other supplies, and clean and disinfect them.

You can express milk while sitting or standing, with your chest slightly tilted forward and the milk flowing toward the nipple. Do what makes you comfortable. Don't lie on the bed because the milk will flow backwards.

Next, stimulate the milk ejection reflex, apply hot towels to the breasts, and massage the breasts after a few minutes. Hold up the breasts with one hand, and use the other hand to slowly rotate and massage from the base of the breast toward the nipple. Apply a little force where there are lumps to help keep the milk ducts unobstructed.

After the massage, you can gently pat the breasts to help the milk ducts expand and help the milk flow from the base of the nipple to the nipple, and then move the container close to the breasts.

2. Avoid eating foods that reduce milk production if you catch a cold during breastfeeding

Foods that cause weaning. Such as barley tea, maltose, leek, pepper, aniseed (fennel), MSG, ginseng, hawthorn, chocolate, bitter melon, malt, raw loquat leaves, scrambled eggs with toon, malted milk, raw hawthorn, etc., should be eaten less or not during a cold.

During a cold, a breastfeeding mother's body is already very weak, and the milk secretion may be less than usual, so at this time you must pay attention to your diet, eat less or no foods that cause milk dry up, just like the common foods that the author listed above, mothers should pay more attention to them.

You can eat more foods that promote milk secretion and are good for colds, such as drinking soup, drinking more water, and eating fruits and vegetables high in vitamins.

Soups: such as chicken soup, fish soup, etc.

Fruits: such as apples, olives, grapes, bananas, citrus, grapefruit, kiwi, strawberry, etc.

Vegetables: dark-colored vegetables such as cabbage, spinach, water spinach, and lettuce.
