What causes high testosterone in women?

What causes high testosterone in women?

High testosterone levels in women are caused by hypothalamic pituitary hyperfunction. When ovarian function declines, estrogen secretion decreases and androgen secretion increases, causing women to develop masculine characteristics. This situation will affect the development of women's secondary characteristics and cause disorders in their female cycles. For women with high testosterone levels, it is best to choose drug treatment to inhibit the secretion of male hormones.

What to do if testosterone is high

Drug treatment

Patients with high testosterone levels can be treated with medication, mainly inhibiting androgen production or anti-androgen, as well as controlling weight. The drug can promote ovulation and is usually taken for about three to six months.

The medication needs to be taken starting from the first day of menstruation, for 21 consecutive days, and then stopped. During the treatment, six hormone tests need to be performed regularly. After the six hormone tests, if they return to normal, the medication can be stopped.

Surgery

If the medication is ineffective and the reduction in androgen is not obvious, laparoscopic surgery should be considered. The follicles are punctured under laparoscopy to reduce the androgen level, thus achieving the therapeutic goal.

(1) Patients who have given birth and have no plans to have more children can undergo resection surgery.

(2) Patients who wish to have children can undergo laparoscopic electrocautery or laser removal of polycystic ovary syndrome to reduce androgen levels.

Chinese medicine conditioning

Regulate female hormones, restore ovarian function and promote ovulation through traditional Chinese medicine methods.

Testosterone exists in small amounts in women's ovaries and adrenal glands. If the testosterone level is too high, it will damage women's ovarian function, leading to infertility and affecting pregnancy. Natural pregnancy is possible after treatment.

Under normal circumstances, the testosterone level in women's serum is stable within a certain range. If it exceeds the normal value, it indicates the possibility of disease. During the follicular phase of a normal menstrual cycle, the average serum testosterone concentration is 0.43 ng/ml, with a maximum limit of 0.68 ng/ml. If it exceeds 0.7 ng/m1 (equal to 2.44 nmol/L), it is called hypertestosteronemia or hyperandrogenism.

The role of testosterone

Effects on the brain, behavior, and mood

Testosterone affects brain development during the embryonic and infant stages by developing certain areas of the brain. During adolescence, as sex hormone levels increase, these brain structures and a full range of behavioral skills are formally formed.

Studies on direct intervention of sex hormones have shown that androgens play an important role in cognitive function. Testosterone use in men with orthopaedics and older men increased their ability to detect flickering or trembling (a measure of attention and alertness), and the improvement was maintained as long as the androgen treatment was given.

Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that androgens play an activating role in cognitive abilities throughout a person's life, from before birth to adulthood and even old age.

Testosterone and Bones

Testosterone inhibits bone resorption by osteoclasts and may also stimulate osteoblast formation, particularly of subperiosteal cortical bone.

What causes high testosterone?

Physiological increase

During pregnancy, the placenta can secrete a small amount of testosterone.

Pathological increase

Increased androgens often cause precocious puberty in males and masculinization in females.

(1) Hyperfunction of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland leads to increased secretion of gonadotropin, which in turn promotes increased testosterone secretion by the testicles and adrenal glands, such as pituitary tumors and brain tissue hyperplasia.

(2) Hyperfunction of the testicles or adrenal glands or ovarian masculinization changes, which lead to increased testosterone secretion, such as testicular tumors, polycystic ovary syndrome, ovarian masculinization tumors and Cushing's syndrome.

(3) Tissues other than the pituitary gland secrete exogenous gonadotropins, which lead to increased testosterone secretion, such as lung cancer, thymic cancer and other cancer tissues.

(4) Non-specific increase, such as in hyperthyroidism and liver cirrhosis, which increases the amount of sex hormone binding protein and often causes an increase in the total testosterone content. In recent years, it is common to take too much health products and beverages containing sex hormones, which can also cause an increase in serum testosterone.

Summary: Through the above introduction, I believe everyone has a better understanding of the treatment methods for high testosterone. In addition, the article also introduces the role of testosterone and the reasons for high testosterone, which are for your reference only. If your testosterone level is too high, you should go to the hospital for examination and treatment in time.
