What to do if you have kidney stone pain during pregnancy

In our lives, many people suffer from kidney stones. In fact, kidney stones are already a relatively serious kidney disease, because it can only be completely cured by breaking up the stones and expelling them from the body during treatment. However, it is also particularly easy to recur, especially for women. After they become pregnant, they tend to urinate frequently, which can easily cause kidney stones. So what should you do if you have kidney stone pain during pregnancy?

Summer is a high-incidence season for urinary stones, and pregnant women are more likely to develop urinary stones due to drastic changes in hormones in their bodies during pregnancy. The risk of already formed kidney stones falling into the ureter will also be greatly increased. The two stages when urinary stones are most likely to occur are the 3rd to 6th month and the 6th to 9th month of pregnancy. If urinary stones are discovered before or during pregnancy, they must be treated promptly.

"Why are pregnant women more likely to develop urinary stones?" During pregnancy, pregnant women's hormones undergo drastic changes, and their entire physiological state also undergoes great changes, so they are more likely to develop ureteral stones during pregnancy. The main reasons include the following five aspects:

First, the estrogen level of pregnant women during pregnancy is relatively low, which usually causes an increase in blood calcium and urinary calcium excretion;

Second, the level of progesterone in pregnant women will increase during pregnancy, which can easily cause ureteral dilation, weakened peristalsis, slower urine flow, and easily cause urine retention;

Third, during the first three months of pregnancy, as the kidneys and ureters begin to expand, physiological hydronephrosis is likely to occur, which can also cause urine retention and provide a breeding ground for the formation of stones;

Fourth, in the late stages of pregnancy, the enlarged uterus of pregnant women can also compress the ureters and bladder, causing them to twist, thereby increasing the risk of obstruction and infection, and inducing stones;

Fifth, if pregnant women have other diseases such as gout and diabetes, it will be more likely to cause stone formation. At the same time, because the enlarged uterus is prone to right rotation, the right ureter of pregnant women is more likely to develop stones.

The incidence of urinary stones during pregnancy is about 1/1500 to 1/2500, of which about 90% of ureteral stones during pregnancy are formed in the kidneys and then descend into the ureters. "The two stages when urinary stones are most likely to occur are the 3rd to 6th month and the 6th to 9th month of pregnancy."

"Pregnancy complicated by ureteral stones is a very tricky problem," because it may not only cause miscarriage, but may also have potential effects on the development of the fetus.

Once urinary stones are formed in pregnant women and become lodged in the ureters, they will cause obstruction and lead to renal colic. In addition, there will be symptoms such as abdominal pain, hematuria, nausea, vomiting, and even damage to kidney function. At the same time, inflammation and pain in the urinary system may induce uterine contractions, which in turn may cause bleeding, miscarriage, premature birth, and affect the safety of pregnant women and fetuses. Therefore, if ureteral stones occur during pregnancy, they must be treated promptly.
