Is labetalol contraindicated during pregnancy?

Is labetalol contraindicated during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, most of the nutrients needed by the body are absorbed by the baby in the belly, so the resistance of a pregnant woman is much weaker than before delivery. For the health of pregnant women and babies, many things containing radiation that may cause miscarriage should be avoided. Many women who pay attention to childbirth safety take off their high heels, put away their unused cosmetics, and make adequate prenatal preparations. So, can labetalol be used by pregnant women?

Labetalol hydrochloride is used for moderate to severe hypertension. Control blood pressure during hypertensive crisis and pheochromocytoma surgery. Labetalol hydrochloride has the best effect on hypertension. Labetalol is an antihypertensive drug that has both α-receptor and β-receptor blocker effects.

Pregnant women generally need to be careful when taking medication, because the fetus's immunity is very weak. So, does pregnant women taking labetalol hydrochloride tablets have any effect on the fetus?

It is well known that pregnant women should be careful when taking medication to prevent fetal malformations. The following medications are not allowed to be taken by pregnant women.

1. Antipyretic and analgesic drugs such as aspirin and phenacetin may cause fetal bone malformation, nervous system or kidney malformation when used by pregnant women. Some may cause hemolysis in the newborn, leading to bleeding tendencies such as head hematoma.

2. Sedatives and sleeping pills such as diazepam can cause congenital malformations in the fetus; meprobamate can cause fetal growth retardation and congenital heart disease; and barbiturates can cause short fingers and toes and nasal congestion.

3. Hormones such as estrogen cause short upper limbs, vaginal adenopathy in female babies, and feminization in male babies. Progesterone can cause masculinization in female babies and hypospadias in male babies. Cortisone can cause anencephaly, cleft lip and palate, and low birth weight deformities. Thyroxine can also cause teratogenesis.

4. Diabetic drugs such as Glycor, Diamecon, Tolbutamide, etc. can cause fetal malformation or death.

Labetalol hydrochloride tablets are used for moderate to severe hypertension. Control blood pressure during hypertensive crisis and pheochromocytoma surgery. Labetalol hydrochloride has the best effect on hypertension. Labetalol is an antihypertensive drug that has both α-receptor and β-receptor blocker effects. It has no selective effect on β1 and β2, and the relative strength of its blocking α receptors and β receptors is 1:3 when taken orally and 1:7 when injected intravenously. Unlike simple beta-blockers, it can reduce supine blood pressure and peripheral vascular resistance, but generally does not reduce cardiac output or stroke volume. There is no obvious change in the patient's heart rhythm in the supine position, but the heart rate slows down in the upright position or when exercising.

However, labetalol hydrochloride tablets are not suitable for use in obstetrics and gynecology, urology, cardiovascular medicine, hypertension, pheochromocytoma, gestational hypertension and other diseases. Therefore, pregnant women should not take labetalol hydrochloride tablets casually.
