The harm of frequent urination at night for women

We often say that we hope to sleep until dawn and wake up naturally, but in life there are often some people who suffer from frequent urination, which causes them to have to get up constantly at night, seriously affecting their sleep quality. Medical staff say that getting up to urinate more than three times a night is abnormal. Frequent urination is also a kind of disease. Besides affecting the quality of sleep, what other harms does frequent urination have on women?

Some people say that if you need to go to the toilet to urinate in the middle of the night, your kidneys are not in good condition. In this regard, Professor Liang Weibo, chief physician of the Urology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University, said in a previous interview that generally speaking, urinating 2-3 times at night is a normal phenomenon and has nothing to do with kidney problems. "Urinating normally from falling asleep at night to getting up in the morning is about 2-3 times, and the urine volume is 300-500 ml, which is one-third of the total daily urine volume. If the number of urinations at night increases to more than 4-5 times, the urine volume exceeds that during the day, and the urine specific gravity is measured to be less than 1.01, it is medically called excessive nocturia."

As for the causes of excessive nocturia, Professor Liang Weibo said that the causes are complex and varied. Drinking too much water before going to bed, psychological stress and aging may all lead to excessive nocturia. "The physiological cause is related to diet or medication before going to bed. Eating water-rich meals, drinking strong tea or coffee, or taking diuretics before going to bed can increase nocturia. The psychological cause is that a person who is in a state of mental tension and tossing and turning in bed will significantly increase the number of times he gets up to urinate at night.

In addition, increased nocturia is also related to age. Due to the degeneration, atrophy or expansion of the renal tubules in the elderly, the function of concentrating urine is reduced, and a large amount of water is excreted from the body through urine, resulting in excessive nocturia. ”

Why do women urinate frequently at night?

Since women are born with shorter urethras than men, they are also very likely to be troubled by the problem of frequent nocturia. After excluding physiological and psychological factors, women with frequent nocturia need to be alert to the following four diseases:

Inflammatory stimulation

Due to the physiological characteristics of women, the total length of the urethra is much shorter than that of men, which creates opportunities for ascending infections such as bacteria, viruses, and pathogens. Once pathogenic microorganisms infect, they will cause inflammation. The stimulation of inflammation often causes the urge to urinate even when the urination is very small. Frequent urination caused by inflammation is accompanied by a special feeling of urgency and pain when urinating.

Stones or tumors

If there are tumors, stones, foreign objects, ectopic endometrium occupying the bladder, or if there are enlarged organs near the bladder, such as ovarian tumors or cysts, pregnancy or uterine fibroids, excessive obesity, etc., the bladder will be subjected to external pressure, which will affect the effective volume of the bladder and may cause frequent urination. Even a small amount of urine will produce a strong urge to urinate.

diabetes

When blood sugar is too high, a large amount of sugar is excreted in the urine. This urine sugar has a certain "diuretic" effect; plus, drinking more water can also cause polyuria in diabetics. In addition, frequent urination at night in diabetic patients may be caused by the impact of diabetes on kidney function. Therefore, diabetics who experience frequent urination at night should be alert to whether there are complications in the kidneys.

Hypercalcemia

People with hyperparathyroidism or multiple myeloma have elevated blood calcium levels that damage the renal tubules, causing a decrease in their reabsorption function and resulting in polyuria. They are also prone to the formation of urinary stones, which further damage renal tubular function and worsen the condition.
