What causes uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are also a common type of uterine fibroids, mainly appearing in the smooth muscle area of the uterus. In recent years, the incidence of uterine fibroids has been relatively high, and has seriously affected women's health. There are many causes of uterine fibroids, and the older the age, the higher the incidence. In addition, excessive obesity often leads to metabolic disorders, which is also an important cause of uterine fibroids.

1. General Factors

1. Age: Uterine fibroids mostly occur in women of childbearing age, more common in women aged 30-50. It is rare for adolescent women to have uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids atrophy or disappear after menopause.

2. Obesity: Obesity can cause metabolic disorders, leading to lack of cyclical regulation of progesterone, causing abnormal menstrual cycles, affecting ovulation, and increasing the risk of uterine fibroids.

3. History of pregnancy and miscarriage: Women with no history of pregnancy and childbirth are more likely to develop uterine fibroids than women with a history of pregnancy and childbirth, and the age of onset is earlier, mainly because menstruation can increase the amount of progesterone in women's bodies.

4. Smoking and drinking: Smoking and drinking can easily induce uterine fibroids. Studies have shown that women who smoke a pack of cigarettes a day are six times more likely to develop uterine fibroids than non-smoking women.

2. Hormone Levels

1. Low estrogen: Biochemical tests have confirmed that the conversion of estradiol to estrone in fibroids is significantly lower than that in normal muscle tissue, and the concentration of estrogen receptors in fibroids is significantly higher than that in surrounding muscle tissue. Therefore, it is believed that the high sensitivity of local fibroid tissue to estrogen is one of the important factors in the occurrence of fibroids.

2. Low progesterone. Progesterone can promote mitosis of fibroids and stimulate their growth. If a woman has low levels of progesterone in her body, it is easy to induce uterine fibroids.

3. Genetic factors

Cytogenetics show that 25%-50% of uterine fibroids have cytogenetic abnormalities, such as chromosome segment position exchange, chromosome long arm rearrangement or partial deletion, etc. Uterine fibroids are formed by the proliferation of monoclonal smooth muscle cells, while multiple uterine fibroids are formed by different clones of cells.

What causes uterine fibroids? The exact cause of uterine fibroids is still unclear. Since uterine fibroids are common during the childbearing age, are rare before puberty, and atrophy or disappear after menopause, their occurrence may be related to female hormones. In addition, studies have found that genetic factors can also affect the incidence of uterine fibroids.
