Can I breastfeed if I have a common cold?

The weather is abnormal in winter and spring, and various pathogens are prevalent, making it extremely easy to get colds and fevers. Colds are clinically known as upper respiratory tract infections, which are generally caused by colds and chills. Some are caused by viral infections and are highly contagious. Some new mothers dare not feed their babies when they have a cold. In fact, there is no problem in continuing to breastfeed, but when using medications for treatment, special attention should be paid to the use of Chinese patent medicines or medicines that are non-irritating to babies.

There is no need to stop breastfeeding during a cold because, whether it is a bacterial or viral infection, when the mother shows symptoms, the baby has already been exposed to the infected environment.

The antibodies produced in breast milk can actually help babies resist disease. Generally speaking, cold viruses are not transmitted through breastfeeding, but are transmitted through respiratory air droplets. In addition, breast milk is the most ideal food for babies. Interrupting breastfeeding is not good for the baby's growth and development, and will also affect their psychological development. So mothers can continue breastfeeding during a cold. If you have a serious cold and need treatment with antibiotics, it is recommended to use penicillins or first-generation or second-generation cephalosporins. If the condition is not serious, it is best not to take medicine. Drinking more boiled water, gargling with salt water, and steaming the nose can relieve the symptoms.

Cold is a relatively common infectious disease. In daily life, it is considered a minor illness and is not taken seriously. Even if you don't take medicine for a common cold, you will basically recover on your own within a week by strengthening your body's immunity. If it is a severe cold, you should go to the hospital for treatment in time. Also, if you have other illnesses, you must pay special attention after being infected with a cold to avoid causing other diseases.
