What is anovulatory menstruation?

Women's menstruation is beneficial to their health. Every time they have a period, they will excrete some waste from their bodies, and it can also keep their reproductive organs in good condition. However, some women have very abnormal menstruation. Not only is the cycle unstable, but they are also prone to anovulatory menstruation. I believe most women don’t know much about this disease. What is anovulatory menstruation? What are the clinical manifestations?

Anovulatory menstruation refers to irregular uterine bleeding caused by dysfunction of the neuroendocrine system that regulates reproduction. It is more common during adolescence and menopause. Dysfunctional uterine bleeding in adolescence is caused by the immature or delayed development of the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis, which results in the growth and development of follicles in the ovaries but the inability to ovulate. Menopausal functional uterine bleeding is caused by the natural aging of the ovaries, lack of follicles, ovarian dysfunction, and reduced sensitivity to pituitary gonadotropin, resulting in inability to ovulate and causing irregular vaginal bleeding. Traditional Chinese medicine calls this disease "menorrhea".

Clinical manifestations

Typical anovulatory functional uterine bleeding is amenorrhea for several weeks or months before menstruation, followed by heavy vaginal bleeding, which often turns into vaginal spotting after a few days. The bleeding may be intermittent, and may last for a short period of time[1], ranging from a few days to dozens of days or even months. Accompanied by secondary anemia, dizziness, palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, edema, loss of appetite, etc. Or it may be accompanied by breast pain, lower abdominal distension, emotional excitement, etc.

So, what is the cause of anovulatory menstruation? Generally speaking, women who are always under excessive mental stress in their daily lives and women who are malnourished are more likely to have anovulatory menstruation. In addition, being too thin is not a good thing for women. Not only is it easy to have anovulatory menstruation, but it is also easy to get other diseases.
