A similar method is called Kegel exercises (also known as perineal contraction exercises), named after Los Angeles doctor Kegel, who popularized the exercise in the 1940s. It is especially useful for pregnant women. Empty your urine before practicing. Beginners should practice by lying on your back with your knees bent and apart. Relax your whole body and contract the muscles near the perineum and anus. Apply force for about 5 to 10 seconds, then slowly relax and rest for 10 seconds. Repeat this contraction and expansion movement twenty times. It may take you a month or two to see results.

Intermittent self-catheterization: If your bladder is not emptying, your doctor may recommend that you learn to use a catheter to drain your urine several times a day. This is especially helpful for overflow incontinence. This method is generally safe and not too uncomfortable.

Absorbent pads: There are a variety of absorbent pads available to help you deal with urine leakage. For example, male patients can use a "urine drop collection bag" (see the picture below). It is a small absorbent bag that fits over the penis and keeps the underwear in place so it doesn’t fall off. Additionally, both male and female patients can wear adult diapers.

Maintain a healthy weight: Being obese or overweight can increase the pressure on your bladder and surrounding muscles, which can weaken their strength over time and lead to stress and urge incontinence.
