What are the complications after hysterectomy?

The structure of the human body is very complex, especially the female body structure is different from that of men. The uterus is a relatively important reproductive organ in the female body, but it is also particularly prone to problems. In recent years, diseases such as uterine cysts and uterine fibroids have been a very disturbing disease for women's health. Often, during the treatment process, they have to choose hysterectomy. In this way, women losing their uterus often has a certain impact on their physical and mental health. If they do not receive good care and rehabilitation after the operation, they are also prone to complications. Let's take a look at the complications after hysterectomy.

Complications after hysterectomy

(1) Ovarian dysfunction:

Before menopause, the endocrine system between the uterus and ovaries maintains a precise and delicate dynamic balance. Hysterectomy will inevitably disrupt this balance and may cause ovarian function to decline, resulting in earlier and more obvious menopausal symptoms.

(2) Female sexual dysfunction:

Estrogen is the most important regulatory hormone for female sexual function, and the ovary is the main secretory organ. After hysterectomy, the blood supply and function of the ovaries are affected. Most women will experience varying degrees of changes in sexual function, such as decreased or lack of libido, decreased frequency of sexual activity, decreased sexual responsiveness, difficulty in orgasm, and decreased sensation in the reproductive organs.

(3) Increased urinary system symptoms:

The female urinary system is homologous to the reproductive system and is both an estrogen-dependent organ. After hysterectomy, the estrogen level decreases, which can cause the elastic tissue around the urethra to thin and lead to urinary incontinence. The urethral mucosa atrophies and the resistance decreases, which can easily induce urinary tract infection and a series of urinary tract irritation symptoms such as frequent urination, urgency, and pain when urinating. Domestic data show that more than 40% of women experience urinary system symptoms after hysterectomy, which is significantly higher than that of women with natural menopause and healthy women.

(4) Prone to combined depression symptoms:

The endocrine regulation of the uterus and ovaries forms a feedback system with the central nervous system. After hysterectomy, this feedback loop is disrupted. In particular, when estrogen levels drop, it interferes with the normal secretion and metabolism of central neurotransmitters, thus forming the material basis for the generation of mental symptoms. It can not only cause early onset of menopausal symptoms, but also cause varying degrees of anxiety and depression symptoms, such as low mood, anxiety, lack of interest, insomnia, memory loss, etc., thereby reducing women's quality of life.

The above is an introduction to the complications after total hysterectomy. After understanding it, we know that the uterus plays an indispensable role in the female body. First of all, hysterectomy will cause certain psychological pressure on women, but it will also affect women’s sexual desire. Therefore, after total hysterectomy, women should get enough rest and adjust their mentality, which is also very helpful for recovery from the disease.
