When is the best time to do glucose tolerance test

Glucose tolerance tests should be done during pregnancy, and diabetes in pregnant women should also be taken seriously. If a pregnant woman has diabetes, her physical fitness will be greatly reduced, and it will continue to affect the physical and mental health of the fetus. Diabetics are most likely to have malformed babies. When is the best time to do the glucose test during pregnancy? You can do a glucose tolerance test at 24 weeks of pregnancy to find out whether you have diabetes.

When is the appropriate time to do the glucose tolerance test?

This test is usually done around 24 weeks. You need to be on an empty stomach and it's best to go out early. Two tubes of blood need to be drawn at an interval of one hour, and the test lasts a while. Draw blood once on an empty stomach, then drink sugar and draw again one hour later, and then draw again one hour later. You cannot eat in between.

It is best for pregnant women to do the glucose tolerance test within 24 weeks and 28 cycles. Do not eat after 8 pm the night before the glucose tolerance test. Do not eat or drink anything except the cup of red bean sugar water before the three blood draws on the day of the test.

Glucose tolerance standard value

Normally, the blood sugar level rises rapidly within 1/2 to 1 hour after taking sugar, and returns to the fasting level after 2 hours. If it does not return to the normal level within 2 hours after taking sugar, and the urine sugar is positive, it means impaired glucose tolerance.

Standard value of glucose tolerance for pregnant women (75g OGCT):

1. Blood sugar. Standard value range: ≤5.1mmol/L

2. Hourly blood sugar level. Standard value range: ≤10.0Mmol/L

3. Hourly blood sugar level. Standard value range: ≤8.5mmol/L

Abnormal risk: If the value of any one of the above three items reaches or exceeds the critical point, it can be diagnosed as hyperglycemia in pregnant women.

Glucose tolerance test FAQs

1. Eat normally 3 days before the experiment and no dietary restrictions are required. Three days before the experiment, the dietary carbohydrate intake (i.e. rice and pasta) should not be less than 150 grams. If the experimenters intentionally reduce the amount of regular meals, the test results will be inaccurate, resulting in an incorrect diagnosis.

2. Exercise as much as possible, avoid over-exercise, and maintain a stable mood: Exercise as much as possible 3 days before the experiment, avoid excessive exercise. However, excessive exercise before the experiment can excite the central nervous system and increase blood sugar. Infection, trauma, and strong fluctuations in mood can excite the central nervous system and affect the results of the glucose tolerance test.

3. Be sure to fast: When doing a glucose tolerance test, pregnant mothers must fast for 8 to 14 hours to truly reflect their blood sugar levels. For example, if you are doing a grape glucose tolerance test at 8 o'clock in the morning, it is best not to eat after 10 o'clock the night before. You can drink water, but not tea or coffee. The first fasting blood sample is used to check the sugar level in the blood, which is called the baseline test.

4. No eating during the experiment: No smoking, eating or drinking during the experiment. You can walk a little, but avoid excessive exercise. Also, pregnant mothers do not need to be anxious or have emotional fluctuations due to repeated blood draws, and should do their best to cooperate with medical staff to draw blood each time.

5. Special circumstances: If symptoms such as pale complexion, nausea, vomiting, or fainting occur during the inspection period, the experiment must be terminated. If the above symptoms occur 3-4 hours after taking sugar, it should be considered as reactive hypoglycemia. Blood should be drawn immediately to measure blood sugar and the patient should be allowed to eat.

Glucose tolerance test is also necessary. Every test after pregnancy has its practical significance. B-ultrasound test can not be skipped, and glucose tolerance test can not be skipped. Do the test at a fixed time to promptly understand the health status of the pregnant woman and the growth and development of the fetus. If everything is normal, the family can feel more at ease.
