Black pepper (scientific name: Piper nigrum), also known as Heichuan, is a flowering vine of the Piperaceae family. Its fruits are usually used as spices and seasonings after being dried. The same fruit is also the raw material for making white, red and green peppercorns. Black pepper is native to South India and is widely grown there and in other tropical regions. The fruit of black pepper is dark red when ripe and contains one seed; after drying, the fruit becomes a pepper drupe with a diameter of 5 mm.

Dried black pepper is a common spice in European-style cuisine. Since ancient times, black pepper has been valued for its dual value as a seasoning and medicine. The aroma of black pepper comes from the piperine it contains. Black pepper, often referred to as "pepper", is one of the most widely used spices in the world and can be found on tables around the world, usually together with refined salt.

Piper nigrum is a perennial climbing vine of the Piperaceae family, native to the Malabar Coast of India. With its fruity, spicy flavor, it was one of the earliest spices used by humans and is probably the most widely used spice today. It is also used as a carminative and to stimulate gastric secretion in medicine. Pepper has a long and extensive history of cultivation in tropical Southeast Asia and has long been regarded as a superior product. It was an important trading commodity between India and Europe and also a medium of exchange. Pepper was also collected as tribute in ancient Greece and Rome. In the Middle Ages, the Venetians and Genoese monopolized the pepper trade, prompting people to look for routes to the Far East.

Edible value

With its fruity, spicy flavor, it was one of the earliest spices used by humans and is probably the most widely used spice today. It is also used as a carminative and to stimulate gastric secretion in medicine.

Drug Application

Like all oriental spices, pepper has a long history of use as both a spice and a medicine. The stronger-flavored Piper longum is usually the medicine of choice, but both Piper longum and black pepper are used medicinally.

Black peppercorns are a remedy in Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani medicine in India. The 5th-century Syriac Book of Medicines states that pepper (probably actually piper longum) can treat constipation, diarrhea, earaches, gangrene, heart disease, hernias, hoarseness, indigestion, insect bites, insomnia, joint pain, liver disease, lung disease, mouth abscesses, sunburn, tooth decay, and toothache. In traditional Chinese medicine, black pepper can treat cold phlegm, food accumulation, cold pain in the abdomen, nausea, vomiting of clear water, diarrhea, cold dysentery, and can also be used to detoxify food poisoning. Many writings after the 5th century also recommended the use of pepper to treat eye diseases, usually by applying an ointment made from pepper directly to the eyes. There is no evidence in modern medicine that these treatments are effective; applying pepper directly to the eyes is uncomfortable and may cause damage to the eyes.

Pepper was long believed to cause people to sneeze; this is still the case today. Some people believe that peppermint irritates the nostrils and causes sneezing; others attribute it to the pepper powder, while others feel that pepper is not a very effective sneeze-inducing agent. However, few controlled experiments have been conducted to answer this question.

Because pepper can irritate the intestines, it should not be included in the diet of patients who have undergone abdominal surgery or have abdominal ulcers: milder foods are generally used instead.

Black pepper contains small amounts of safrole, a carcinogen.

In the above article, we introduced that female friends are prone to loss of appetite, poor spirits, and back pain during menstruation. We cannot choose to eat some sour, spicy and stimulating foods just because of the loss of appetite during menstruation. The black pepper mentioned above has a very stimulating effect, so it is not suitable for female friends to eat during menstruation.
