Everyday Health: Fall Prevention

Fall Prevention

There are many elderly people and children who often fall in life. I never thought that as a middle-aged person, I also experienced a fall on the first working day after the Spring Festival. The eight knee injury diagnoses in the MRI report and the experience of having to rest in bed made me realize the difficulties of disabled people. Based on this, I wrote this article on fall prevention, hoping to attract everyone's attention and avoid accidents.

Falls are a common accident, especially for older adults, children, and people with certain medical conditions. Here are some tips for preventing falls:

Home environment improvement

Keep the floor dry: clean up water stains, oil stains, debris, etc. on the floor in a timely manner, and lay anti-slip mats in bathrooms, kitchens and other places that are prone to moisture.

Arrange furniture reasonably: Furniture should be placed neatly and orderly, avoid placing obstacles in the passage, and ensure that the indoor passage is spacious and unobstructed.

Install necessary facilities: Install handrails in toilets, stairs and other places to make it easier for the elderly or people with limited mobility to grab on and reduce the risk of falling.

Daily behavior attention

Wear appropriate clothing and shoes: Choose fitting and comfortable clothing, and avoid hems or trouser legs that are too long or too wide to avoid tripping. At the same time, wear non-slip, well-fitting shoes, and avoid wearing high heels, slippers, or shoes with severely worn soles.

Pay attention to your walking posture: Keep your head up and chest out, look forward, and don't play with your phone or do other distracting things while walking. When going up and down stairs, walk firmly step by step and hold the handrail.

Avoid hasty actions: Get up, stand up, turn around and other movements slowly to avoid sudden changes in body position that may cause dizziness and fall. Especially for the elderly, when getting up at night, you can sit by the bed for a while and wait for the body to adapt before getting up and walking.

Special population concerns

Elderly people: Have regular physical examinations and promptly treat diseases that may cause falls, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, etc. Encourage the elderly to do appropriate physical exercise to enhance muscle strength, balance and body coordination.

Children: Parents or guardians should always pay attention to children's activities and provide a safe environment when children are learning to walk and play, such as laying soft mats on the ground. At the same time, children should be educated to obey traffic rules and pay attention to road safety.

Vision and hearing protection

Check your vision and hearing regularly: detect and correct vision and hearing problems in a timely manner, wear appropriate glasses or hearing aids to improve the body's perception ability and reduce the risk of falls caused by vision or hearing impairment.

Good lighting conditions: Make sure there is adequate lighting in all areas of the home, especially in stairwells, hallways, bathrooms and other places where falls are likely to occur. Install lamps with sufficient brightness and replace damaged bulbs in a timely manner.

Learn the knowledge of emergency treatment for falls: learn how to minimize injuries when falling, and how to properly deal with injuries and seek help after falling. At the same time, family members and friends should also master relevant knowledge so that they can provide timely help when necessary.
