The harm that tics bring to children is not only the symptoms, but most parents don’t notice it.

The harm that tics bring to children is not only the symptoms, but most parents don’t notice it.

Misconceptions about tics

"Tics are more common in children, and only a small number of children can heal themselves." This is what most parents can find online. Most parents only see that it can heal itself and think that luck has come to them, but they don't know that in addition to the inability to heal easily, there are many more "complications" that interfere with the growth of children.

The protagonist of our story today is called Honghong, who is 12 years old this year. He was originally at an age where he could enjoy his study life and childhood, but everything changed completely because of Tourette syndrome...

01Tics will cause tremendous pressure on children little by little. The incident started a year ago. One day, Honghong's eyes suddenly twitched inexplicably. At first, his parents didn't even notice it. Later, the symptoms gradually worsened and increased in frequency. Tics such as blinking, squinting, opening the mouth, and shrugging slowly appeared.

At first, the parents were still very worried, but due to lack of understanding, they felt that the symptoms were "within the controllable range" and blindly believed that "the condition will improve as the child grows up." They did not go to the hospital for professional examinations, but only controlled the child's diet, daily routine, and nutritional supplements to a limited extent. Obviously, these cannot cure Tourette syndrome.

Gradually, the parents found that the child was very irritable, always lost his temper , and would suddenly become furious because of a twitch in the corner of his eye. The child was always addicted to the world of games and mobile phones. Even if he was not playing games, he liked to talk to his family members. He also didn't like going out and always stayed at home.

The mother said: "The child used to be very lively and loved to play. At that time, we always wanted him to stay at home more to study. Later, he never went out, and he was not willing to play even when we wanted him to." The feedback from the school teachers was the same. Although the symptoms of tics theoretically would not have any serious impact, they actually caused changes in the child's personality and psychological pressure, and parents are always "a step behind" in understanding the child's psychology.

02 Good intentions can also have negative effects In the TV series "Growing Up with You", Liu Tao plays "Su Xing" who has a child with Tourette syndrome. Because she does not understand the disease, she always attributes the child's " uncoordinated movements, lack of self-control, lack of concentration, and swearing " problems to disobedience, which aggravates her son's condition. The teacher of the training institution's label of "troublemaking and disobedience" further aggravates the tension between mother and child, bringing great pressure to the child.

This is also the source of psychological pressure for all children with Tourette syndrome. More often than not, the expectations of their parents and grandparents are the motivation for their children. However, when the "high wall" of Tourette syndrome stands in front of the children, these motivations of their parents become huge pressure for their children.

In fact, in addition to family relationships, tics are more likely to cause psychological pressure on children in external interactions. Children will still maintain communication with their parents and grandparents as relatives, but when facing teachers and classmates, they will be more "face-conscious". The sense of shame brought by tics will be infinitely magnified in front of outsiders, causing huge psychological pressure on children. Even the kind concern of teachers and classmates will make children feel ashamed and embarrassed to face it.

Many parents have reported that their children, unfortunately suffering from Tourette syndrome, are often very resistant to going to school. They become withdrawn, quiet, and always alone at school.

03 Treatment of tics is urgent. If tics bring psychological pressure to children, the tics problem of children must be solved. This is why we emphasize the superiority of " early intervention and early treatment " early on. Because more than ten years of learning career is irreversible, the psychological growth of children is also irreversible. Once a timid, withdrawn and cowardly character is formed, it will have a negative impact on the future development of children.

In the TV series "Growing Up with You", the mother played by Liu Tao finally realized her problem and took her child to a regular, professional hospital for examination. The child's condition gradually improved and returned to normal life.

In real life, Honghong also recovered under the treatment intervention and careful care of our hospital. His symptoms were controlled and he became more confident in going to school.

Children will encounter many problems as they grow up and even enter society. Not every problem can be solved by "time". Problems such as tics, ADHD, height problems, and precocious puberty will cause different harms to children. Early intervention and treatment and avoiding negative attitudes are the correct ways to deal with problems.
