[Medical Q&A] How to deal with hair loss during chemotherapy?

Planner: Chinese Medical Association

Chemotherapy is a method of treating cancer. Although it can fight cancer cells, it will inevitably affect normal cells (such as hair follicle cells). When the growth and division of hair follicle cells are blocked, the hair follicles will stop growing and cause hair loss. Not every chemotherapy patient will lose their hair, it depends on the type of drug and personal constitution. Hair loss usually occurs a few weeks after the start of chemotherapy, but it is temporary and the hair will grow back after chemotherapy ends. If hair loss occurs during chemotherapy, you can make some preparations in advance.

Cut or shave your hair in advance: reduce psychological pressure, and at the same time you can choose your favorite wig in advance to maintain your image.

Protect your scalp: Use mild cleansing and conditioning products, avoid direct sunlight and cold air, and wear a hat or scarf if necessary.

3. Psychological adjustment: Communicate with relatives, friends, fellow patients or psychological professionals, seek their support and encouragement, and accept and adapt to this change.

3. Healthy diet: Maintain a balanced diet and supplement with more protein, vitamins and minerals to help the body recover and hair regenerate.

Remember, hair loss is just a side effect of chemotherapy and will grow back after treatment is over. Stay positive and face the challenges together.
