Hyperopia ≠ Presbyopia

Hyperopia ≠ Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a physiological phenomenon and an inevitable visual problem for all elderly people. It is a phenomenon of difficulty in near vision due to the weakening of the physiological adjustment function of the eyes caused by aging. The formation of presbyopia is mainly closely related to aging. It is a visual problem that will inevitably occur when people enter middle age and old age, and it is one of the signs that the body is beginning to age.

Typical symptoms of presbyopia

  • Difficulty seeing close objects: This mainly manifests as difficulty seeing clearly when reading books, newspapers, or mobile phones. The head unconsciously tilts back, or the book or mobile phone is held farther away to see clearly.
  • The demand for light increases: When the light is dim, vision is blurrier, so the brightness of the phone needs to be increased, and the room needs to be brighter when reading, which requires stronger lighting.
  • Easy visual fatigue: Unable to look at close objects for a long time, and symptoms such as eye soreness, eye swelling, dry eyes, and headaches will occur over time.

Are hyperopia and presbyopia the same thing?

Hyperopia is a type of refractive error, which refers to a refractive state in which parallel light beams are refracted by the relaxed eyeball and imaged behind the retina. Hyperopia occurs when the refractive power of the eyeball is insufficient or the axial length of the eyeball is insufficient. The optical focus of the hyperopic eye is behind the retina, so the image formed on the retina is blurred.

Presbyopia is a phenomenon of normal aging of the human body and does not fall into the category of ophthalmic diseases. It means that with the increase of age, the lens in the eye begins to harden and lose elasticity, and the ciliary muscle also begins to relax and cannot adjust normally. Patients will experience blurry vision when looking at nearby objects due to absolute lack of accommodation, which makes it impossible to focus on the retina and the image becomes unclear.

How to get rid of presbyopia?

Reading glasses are a common correction method, and some young people with presbyopia do not want to wear reading glasses early for the sake of convenience and beauty. The most common question they ask is whether there are other ways to correct presbyopia?

Dean Cao Xiangrong of Tianjin University Aier Eye Hospital said that in addition to wearing glasses, there is another way to correct presbyopia by implanting a trifocal intraocular lens. The trifocal lens can solve the problems of presbyopia, cataracts, myopia, hyperopia, etc. at the same time, and has a full range of vision for far, medium and near. Of course, everyone's eye condition is different, and whether it is suitable for surgical correction requires a comprehensive assessment by a professional doctor.
