Protecting the patient's "brain lifeline"! Nanhua Hospital successfully performed the first carotid endarterectomy

Recently, the interventional vascular surgery team of Nanhua Hospital affiliated to the University of South China successfully performed carotid endarterectomy (CEA) on a 76-year-old patient with carotid artery stenosis, successfully opening up the patient's severely stenotic "brain lifeline", eliminating the risk of cerebral infarction, and ensuring the patient's life, health and safety.

This operation marks a new breakthrough for Nanhua Hospital in the prevention and treatment of ischemic cerebrovascular disease, and also marks a new step in the connotation construction of the hospital's stroke center.

The patient underwent carotid artery ultrasound and cerebral angiography, and the results showed that his left internal carotid artery was severely narrowed by 90%. Plaque detachment could occur at any time, causing large-area cerebral infarction, or even a life-threatening condition.

Faced with such a serious condition, the interventional vascular surgery team of Nanhua Hospital attached great importance to it and actively sought the best treatment plan.

After fully communicating with the patient, the department decided to perform left carotid artery incision exploration + scleroendarterectomy under general anesthesia for the patient. To ensure the smooth progress of the operation, all medical staff in the department carried out systematic learning of this technology, and organized detailed preoperative discussions and a full-hospital consultation.

The medical department, neurology department, ICU, anesthesia department, operating room and other departments participated in the comprehensive preoperative evaluation and risk prediction of the patient. In order to prevent complications such as cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, and hyperperfusion syndrome after surgery, experts have developed a meticulous surgical treatment plan from preoperative preparation, intraoperative cooperation to postoperative treatment and nursing, to ensure the safety of the patient's surgery.

On the morning of October 12, the interventional vascular surgery team, in collaboration with the anesthesiology department, operating room, ICU and other departments, officially performed surgery on the patient. The entire operation took only 80 minutes, and the patient's vital signs were stable after the operation.

One day after the operation, the patient was transferred back to the general ward from the ICU; three days after the operation, the drainage tube in the patient's neck wound was successfully removed; seven days after the operation, the patient recovered and was discharged from the hospital, and no complications occurred during this period.
