Tips for dealing with nosebleeds

Tips for dealing with nosebleeds

Nosebleed is one of the common emergencies in the ENT department. The nasal mucosa is rich in blood vessels and superficial, so it is easy to bleed. The causes of nosebleed are mostly trauma or picking the nostrils with fingers.

Emergency measures

Minor nose bleeding will often stop on its own. If the bleeding is more severe, you can follow the following methods to deal with it.

① Stay calm.

② Sit with your head tilted forward, not backward, otherwise blood will flow into the stomach, causing nausea and vomiting, or blood will flow into the trachea, causing suffocation.

③ You can use a cold wet towel, ice pack, etc. to cool your forehead or nose, or hold cold water in your hands and cover your mouth and nose to cause blood vessels to contract and stop bleeding. Change the cold wet towel or ice cubes frequently.

④ Breathe through your mouth and pinch the area above the nose (below the nasal bone) for a few minutes, which can also help stop bleeding.

⑤ When conditions do not permit, you can first use clean toilet paper or soft cloth to plug the nostrils. If conditions permit, it is best to use cotton balls to plug the nostrils tightly, and drop 2-3 drops of ephedrine or nose drops on the cotton to achieve better hemostatic effects.

⑥ If bleeding still does not stop after the above operations, the patient must be sent to the hospital immediately. In the hospital, in addition to continuing to stop the bleeding, the cause of the bleeding should also be found out.

A jingle to help you deal with nosebleeds

Nosebleeds require sedation and a sitting position with the head tilted forward.

Pinch the wings of your nose, rinse with cold water, and plug your nostrils with toilet paper.

If the bleeding is small, stop on its own. If the effect is poor, consult a doctor.
