What should you do if your child hurts his teeth while playing? Don’t worry! Please keep this “self-help guide” for dental injuries

Recently, Xiaochen, who likes to play skateboard, fell heavily and felt a sharp pain in his face and blood kept flowing out of his gums. Xiaochen's mother quickly took the child to the Department of Stomatology of Hunan Want Want Hospital . Deputy Chief Physician Zuo Zhiling and Chief Physician Zhou Ping saw Xiaochen.

The doctor comforted the child while completing the relevant oral examination. The results of the oral specialist examination were: irregular complete laceration of the upper lip, the upper incisor was embedded in the alveolar bone, and the alveolar bone plate was fractured and loose. The imaging examination CBCT showed : labial embedding dislocation of the upper right 1, complete splitting of the upper left 1, and labial alveolar bone fracture.

Based on the examination results, the doctor diagnosed: alveolar bone fracture, fracture of both upper teeth, impacted dislocation of the upper right tooth, and gingival laceration.

(CBCT imaging showed: labial embedded dislocation of the upper right 1, complete splitting of the upper left 1, and labial alveolar bone fracture.)

In view of the child's current injury, the doctor fully informed him of the treatment plan, treatment process, potential risks and prognosis costs, etc. After the patient's family members were informed and agreed, the doctor extracted the upper left incisor under local anesthesia, repositioned the alveolar bone, repositioned and fixed the upper right incisor, sutured the torn gums, and other symptomatic treatments.

Popular Science Knowledge:

1. The most common causes of dental trauma:

Falls and collisions, traffic accidents, sports injuries, violence, behavioral factors (such as biting hairpins, biting screws, using teeth to open beer bottle caps or soda bottle caps, etc.), and other factors (iatrogenic dental trauma and damage to teeth caused by piercing ornaments in the mouth).

2. Classification of dental trauma:

For various conditions such as tooth concussion, tooth dislocation, tooth fracture, etc., treatment measures need to be taken according to the condition, such as repositioning treatment, post and core crown restoration, root canal treatment, etc.

3. Precautions after dental trauma treatment:

1. Keep your mouth clean

Pay attention to oral hygiene, clean your teeth, brush your teeth in the morning and evening, clean up food residues in time, use antibacterial saliva to prevent infection.

2. Avoid eating hard food

For example, walnuts, soybeans, sugarcane, apples, pine nuts, etc. can reduce adverse stimulation and promote tooth recovery.

3. Regular review

After the treatment, you should go to the hospital for regular checkups to understand the recovery of your teeth. If you experience tooth pain, swollen gums, or loose teeth, you should return to the hospital for a follow-up visit.

4. Wear protective gear

If you participate in sports such as basketball, football, skateboarding, etc., you should wear protective gear, such as a mask, helmet, protective mouthpiece, etc. to protect your teeth and prevent them from being injured again.

4. How to complete on-site self-rescue of teeth after dental trauma:

1. Once dental trauma occurs, parents should determine whether there are any abnormalities in the teeth and find broken or fallen teeth at the scene.

2. When picking up a tooth, hold the crown part with your hand to avoid touching the root.

3. Do not wrap or wipe teeth with paper towels. Soak teeth in pure milk or saline to maintain the physiological activity of teeth. If teeth are contaminated, rinse with running cold water for 10 seconds and then soak. Children with good self-care ability can hold teeth in their mouths, but be careful to avoid swallowing them by mistake. If the teeth fall out intact, they can be rinsed and put back into the tooth socket.

4. Go to a dental specialist immediately to see a professional doctor for treatment. Tooth replantation is best performed within two hours after dislocation, and it is best to replant within 15-30 minutes.

Zuo Zhiling, deputy chief physician of the Department of Stomatology at Hunan Want Want Hospital, kindly reminds you: After a dental trauma occurs, you should seek medical attention promptly to avoid delaying treatment. In particular, tooth fractures and dislocations should be treated promptly to maximize the retention of the injured teeth so that they can be restored to good function and appearance.
