Q: Why should I get the HPV vaccine?

The incidence of cervical cancer ranks second among female malignant tumors in my country and is a "major killer" that threatens women's life and health. Its main cause is persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV vaccination can effectively prevent related types of HPV infection and is the most economical and effective means of preventing cervical cancer.

Q: What types of HPV can the bivalent HPV vaccine prevent? HPV16 and 18 infections can cause about 71% of cervical cancer, and are also associated with 85% and 87% of HPV-related head and neck cancers and anal cancers. The domestically produced bivalent HPV vaccine, which is free for girls of appropriate age, can effectively prevent infection with the above two subtypes.

Q: Is it too early for middle school students to receive HPV vaccine? Epidemiological studies show that the first peak of HPV infection among Chinese women is between 15 and 24 years old. Girls aged 9 to 14 can be protected by HPV vaccine before the first peak of infection age, and the vaccination effect is the best.

In addition, the World Health Organization (WHO) also recommended in its "Global Strategy to Accelerate the Elimination of Cervical Cancer" released in November 2020 that the primary target population for HPV vaccination is girls aged 9-14 before sexual activity, and recommended two doses. Immunization strategies should prioritize ensuring a high vaccination rate for this population. It can be seen that increasing the HPV vaccination rate for girls aged 9-14 has become a global consensus.
