Summer is here, do you really understand dyshidrotic eczema?

Midsummer is approaching, and more and more patients with dyshidrotic eczema are visiting dermatology departments in hospitals across the country.

Small blisters appeared on his palms and fingers, and there was peeling in many places. The affected areas were very itchy, which seriously affected his normal work and life. He was worried that the disease would be transmitted to his family, so he rushed to the hospital for treatment.

After careful examination by Li Yang, the attending dermatologist, it was finally confirmed to be dyshidrotic eczema, and medication was prescribed for Xiao Yang. When Xiao Yang learned that dyshidrotic eczema was not contagious, he finally put his mind at ease.

Li Yang said that every summer, the hospital receives about 10 patients with dyshidrosis like Xiao Yang every day, and most of them can recover after simple treatment. He reminded that dyshidrosis can mostly heal on its own, and if the condition is serious, please go to a regular hospital's dermatology department for treatment in time.

What is sweat herpes

Dyshidrosis is a special type of eczema that occurs more frequently in summer. Common symptoms include small blisters on the palms that are slightly above the skin surface, with varying degrees of itching and burning sensations, which usually occur regularly every year.

Causes of sweat herpes

The cause of the disease is still unclear, but it may be related to multiple factors.

Genetic factors: Relevant studies have shown that dyshidrotic eczema may be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait and may occur in families.

Local contact irritation: Alloy products containing metallic nickel and chromium, the compound potassium dichromate and some spices may also cause sweat herpes.

Physical factors: People with allergies or hyperhidrosis are prone to dyshidrosis, especially those with hyperhidrosis, where the incidence rate is 2.5 times that of normal people.

Psychological factors: Mental stress, staying up late, fatigue, etc. can also easily induce dyshidrosis.

Can blisters be popped?

It is not recommended to puncture the blisters. Generally, the blisters will be gradually absorbed by the human body. If they are punctured, inadequate disinfection may cause fungal infection.

What is the difference between dyshidrotic eczema and tinea pedis?

Tinea pedis is caused by fungal infection, usually occurs on one hand or foot, asymmetrically, and is contagious. Dyshidrotic eczema is usually symmetrically distributed on both hands and feet, is not contagious, and is common on the sides of the fingers. In severe cases, it will grow on the palms and soles of the feet. Dermatologists will take the patient's dandruff for fungal examination. If the result shows that the fungus is positive, it can generally be diagnosed as tinea pedis.

Treatment of sweat herpes

1. Systemic treatment (oral medication). Usually used for patients with severe itching. Prednisone acetate 20-30 mg/day, for 5-7 days; can also be combined with antihistamines such as loratadine, cetirizine, etc. If the effect is still unsatisfactory, immunosuppressants such as methotrexate and azathioprine may be needed.

2. Topical medications. During the blister stage, calamine lotion can be applied externally; after desquamation occurs, glucocorticoid ointments (such as triamcinolone acetonide urea ointment, etc.) can be applied externally; for those with repeated local desquamation, dryness and pain, 2%-5% salicylic acid ointment, 10% urea fat, etc. can be applied externally.

3. Physical therapy. High-voltage radiotherapy, PUVA, etc. have certain effects on stubborn dyshidrosis herpes that are not responsive to other treatments.

How to prevent the occurrence of sweat herpes

Avoid contact with alloy products containing nickel and chromium, such as eyeglass frames, belt buckles, etc. It is recommended to choose mild and non-irritating hand soap, shampoo, detergent, etc., or wear gloves for washing. Maintain a good attitude, avoid excessive stress, and don't stay up late.
