Jia Haiwei, at which stages of retinoblastoma is eye-saving treatment suitable?

Retinoblastoma, also known as RB, is the most common intraocular malignancy in infants and young children, especially in young children. This tumor is extremely malignant and once it occurs, it poses a serious threat to the life safety of the child.

When treating retinoblastoma, doctors need to develop an appropriate treatment plan based on the stage of the tumor. For early-stage tumors, eye-saving treatment is usually given priority to preserve the child's eyeball and its function. However, once the tumor enters the extraocular stage and cannot be controlled by eye-saving treatment, doctors usually choose to surgically remove the eyeball.

After surgical resection, the doctor will decide whether radiotherapy or chemotherapy is needed based on the condition of the tumor stump and whether there are any residual tumor cells. These follow-up treatments are designed to completely eliminate tumor cells and reduce the risk of recurrence. In addition, for retinoblastoma, some local treatments can also be considered, such as local arterial infusion chemotherapy, local injection of drugs, and cryotherapy.

Comprehensive treatment is the key to improving the cure rate of retinoblastoma. In experienced medical centers in my country, through comprehensive treatment, the five-year survival rate of retinoblastoma has reached 90% to 95% or more. This figure is significantly higher than the treatment effect in the past, which fully demonstrates the important role of comprehensive treatment in improving the cure rate and survival rate.

Although retinoblastoma is a highly malignant tumor, the survival rate and cure rate of children can be significantly improved through early detection, comprehensive treatment and follow-up care. Therefore, for abnormal masses in children's eye sockets, they should be diagnosed and treated as early as possible to maximize the chances of survival.
