Eating too many oranges may turn you into a "Minion"

Now is the best time to eat oranges. For "orange lovers", it is extremely happy. There are many kinds of oranges, such as honey oranges, tangerines, sugar oranges, and tangerines. However, be careful not to eat too many oranges, or you will become a "minion" or even get sick. How many oranges should you eat a day? Why does eating too many oranges cause internal heat? Who is not suitable to eat oranges? Jin Hui, director of the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Chief Physician of the Department of Endocrinology of Zhongda Hospital Affiliated to Southeast University, will answer your questions one by one.

Why does eating too many oranges turn you into a Minion?

If you peel too many oranges, your hands will turn yellow. If you eat too many oranges, why does your skin turn "yellow"? Jin Hui said that this is because oranges contain carotene or carotenoids, which are important sources of yellow. After consuming a large amount of carrots and oranges excessively or in a short period of time, some people's skin may turn a little yellow. In fact, this is not a pathological condition. However, from a nutritional point of view, it is not recommended to consume a large amount of a single fruit. It is hoped that the diet structure will be balanced and diverse. Therefore, when eating fruits, do not only eat oranges or carrots. You can use oranges with other fruits, such as apples, pears and other seasonal fruits. This not only ensures balanced nutrition, but also avoids the phenomenon of yellow skin.

If oranges cause internal heat in the body, can I eat tangerines instead?

Many people think that eating oranges will cause getting a sore throat, but tangerines will not. Is this really true?

Experts point out that eating too much tangerines can still cause internal heat. Eating tangerines or tangerines may have something to do with some concepts of traditional Chinese medicine. Eating tangerines and other fruits may cause more sugar in the mouth, which may lead to certain bacterial infections and skin or oral ulcers, so it is important to control the intake of fruits. Experts remind that in the dry autumn and winter, drinking more water can improve the dryness or internal heat.

Is it better to eat oranges directly or drink their juice?

Orange juice is a favorite drink for many people, but will it destroy the nutrients in oranges? Will it increase blood sugar levels?

Jin Hui introduced that among fruits, oranges in particular, have a low glycemic index. From a nutritional point of view, the daily fruit intake per person should be controlled at 200-300 grams, which is equivalent to a large orange. Making juice is also one of the ways to eat fruits, but you must pay attention to the amount control. Often a glass of juice may require a lot of oranges or tangerines, and the intake may exceed the standard. In addition, in the process of making oranges into juice, the dietary fiber of the oranges will be thrown away, leaving only fructose and water, thus losing dietary fiber.

Oranges are delicious, but not for everyone

Jin Hui introduced that as a fruit, the most important components of oranges are dietary fiber, fructose, and water. In addition, its potassium content is relatively high, so patients with hyperkalemia, especially those with chronic renal insufficiency, should be cautious when eating them. Because patients with high potassium will limit their potassium intake from food, medicine, etc. However, fruits such as oranges, tangerines, and bananas have a relatively high potassium content and should be appropriately restricted or temporarily not used to avoid aggravating the occurrence of hyperkalemia. Because hyperkalemia is very critical and may cause arrhythmias or even sudden cardiac events.
