The "optimal blood pressure value" for Chinese people is released! What else should you know about high blood pressure?

1. What is hypertension?

Hypertension, high blood sugar and high blood lipids are collectively known as the "three highs". Hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, kidney disease and death. It is estimated that there are 200 million people with hypertension in my country, making it a major disease that threatens the health of residents.

1. Diagnostic criteria for hypertension

Patients with hypertension often have symptoms such as dizziness, headache, head swelling, blurred vision, tinnitus, palpitations, forgetfulness, irritability, insomnia, fatigue, and inattention.

2. Blood pressure reduction target

There is still controversy about the optimal blood pressure target. The US guidelines lowered the blood pressure target from <140/90 mmHg to <130/80 mmHg. The 2018 European Hypertension Guidelines recommend that the blood pressure target for all patients be 140/90 mmHg, which can be lowered to <130/80 mmHg if tolerated.

3. The “optimal blood pressure value” for Chinese people is released

Recently, the results of a large-scale randomized clinical trial were announced at the 2023 Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Heart Association (AHA). The study found that for people with high blood pressure, compared with the standard blood pressure reduction of systolic blood pressure (high pressure) to <140 mmHg, the intensive blood pressure reduction of systolic blood pressure (high pressure) to <120 mmHg can significantly reduce the risk of adverse cardiovascular diseases and the risk of death.

In other words, lowering high blood pressure to 140 mmHg is not the end of the story. The best outcome is to lower it to less than 120 mmHg!

3. These blood pressure lowering habits must be kept in mind

1. Control salt intake (about 6g per day)

For patients with hypertension, paying attention to a low-salt diet is an important lifestyle intervention that helps strengthen blood pressure control. You can try to choose low-sodium salt, which is a mixture of a certain proportion of potassium chloride, which also has a salty taste, in ordinary table salt (sodium chloride content 90% to 99%) to reduce sodium intake.

However, it should be noted that low-sodium salt contains potassium, and is not suitable for people with kidney disease, high blood potassium, and high blood pressure who take pril and sartan drugs.

2. Quit smoking and drinking

Smoking can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Chemicals in tobacco can damage blood vessel walls, cause inflammation and hardening of blood vessels, and constrict arteries. Arteriosclerosis can increase blood pressure. Secondhand and thirdhand smoke can also affect blood vessels.

Drinking is also one of the important factors leading to high blood pressure. Many people who love to drink often suffer from high blood pressure. You should observe carefully in your life. This is because drinking a lot of alcohol will increase the excitability of the sympathetic nervous system, increase heart rate and cardiac output, and thus increase blood pressure.

3. Reduce mental stress and ensure sleep

Many patients with hypertension, especially young people, have their hypertension closely related to work and life pressure. They have a tight work pace during the day and cannot get a good rest at noon. They have various social engagements at night, stay up late and work hard, and lack of sleep. The mental stress will keep the body in a state of stress for a long time, and the secretion of adrenaline and various emergency hormones will increase, which will lead to high blood pressure and increased heart rate.
