Will wearing glasses for a long time really cause eye deformation?

"I heard that if you wear glasses for a long time, your eyes will become more and more protruding?"

Some people would rather not see clearly than wear glasses

Even develop a rejection of glasses

So, does wearing glasses really affect your appearance?

Myopia is the culprit for bulging eyes

The reason why the eyeball becomes bulging is due to the growth of the eye axis. Generally speaking, the higher the degree of myopia and the longer the eye axis, the greater the possibility of bulging eyeballs. The eye axis of patients with high myopia is longer than that of people with moderate or low myopia and healthy vision, so the eyes may appear slightly protruding, which will give the illusion of sunken eye sockets. For parents, if they do not let their children wear glasses because they are afraid that their eyes will become bulging, it may aggravate visual fatigue and accelerate the development of myopia in children.

Eyes become smaller after wearing glasses

It just "shrank" visually.

After becoming myopic, most people will feel that their eyes have become smaller, and the greater the degree of myopia, the smaller the eyes appear. In fact, our eyes have not really become smaller. The human eye is like a camera, which can adjust the focal length according to the distance of the object being viewed and focus the light on the retina. If myopic patients want to see things clearly again, they need to artificially intervene in the refraction of the refractive system, that is, add a concave lens such as glasses in front of the eyes to move the image backward. However, since the concave lens itself has the function of shrinking objects, looking at the eyes through the thick lenses will naturally make the eyes feel much smaller.

Zhu Lina, director of Tianjin University Aier Eye Hospital, said that a pair of qualified glasses can not only correct vision, but also allow us to see clearly, comfortably and for a long time. On the contrary, if you are myopic and do not wear glasses, it may cause visual fatigue due to unclear vision, which will cause changes in visual functions such as accommodation and convergence over time, which will not only easily deepen myopia, but may even lead to strabismus. Therefore, if you are myopic, you must go to a regular medical institution for standardized examinations and scientifically fit glasses.
