When the weather turns cold, remember to protect your eyes

Tianjin has recently experienced strong winds and cooling weather, and we officially entered winter yesterday. While we keep our bodies warm, our eyes are actually also afraid of the cold.

Effects of cold weather on the eyes

1. Dry Eyes

The air is cold and dry in winter, and the humidity indoors and outdoors is low, which can make the eyes dry and uncomfortable. Using air conditioners, small suns and other heating equipment indoors can aggravate the symptoms of dry eyes and increase the possibility of dry eye syndrome. For people who already suffer from dry eye syndrome, the risk of aggravation is even greater.

2. Tears in the wind

When the eyes are stimulated by cold wind, the tear glands secrete more and tears cannot flow out normally, which will lead to tears in the wind. The elderly are more susceptible to the disease due to the degeneration of the tear glands and tear ducts.

3. Glaucoma

Cold stimulation can also excite the sympathetic nerves, causing a sharp increase in intraocular pressure in a short period of time, which can easily induce glaucoma and cause symptoms such as headaches, eye pain, and decreased vision.

4. "Eye stroke"

Some elderly people suffer from hardening of their blood vessels. When the temperature drops suddenly, their blood vessels contract abnormally, which can cause retinal artery obstruction. They are prone to sudden vision loss or blindness, commonly known as "eye stroke."

How to protect your eyes in winter?

Tianjin University Aier Eye Hospital kindly reminds you that in winter, it is recommended to reduce outdoor activities as much as possible to avoid strong stimulation of the eyes by cold air. Humidifiers can be used indoors to increase the air humidity in the room. If dry eyes appear, hot towels can be used to promote blood circulation in the eyes and relieve eye discomfort.

In terms of diet, you should eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and other foods rich in vitamins. Vitamins are the main nutrients for maintaining the normal metabolism of human epithelial tissue, which can maintain normal metabolism of the cornea and improve the ability to see in dim light.
