When cleaning his eyes, the needle accidentally fell off and pierced his eyeball, and the man almost went blind

After rust entered his left eye, 36-year-old Mr. Liu (a pseudonym) used a syringe and saline solution to clean his eyes for convenience. Unexpectedly, the syringe needle pierced his eye, causing a penetrating injury to the eyeball and almost facing blindness.

Mr. Liu lives in Xianning. A week ago, rust accidentally entered his left eye while he was working. So Mr. Liu bought a syringe with a needle and saline solution at a pharmacy. When he was flushing his eyes, the needle accidentally fell off and pierced his left eye. Mr. Liu immediately experienced symptoms such as blurred vision and eye pain. At first, Mr. Liu thought he would recover after a rest. But after a day, the blurred vision symptoms worsened, so he came to the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University for treatment.

After examination, Mr. Liu's right eye vision was 1.0, and the left eye vision was only 0.04. Yan Jing, chief physician of the hospital's fundus disease department, found that Mr. Liu's left eye was congested, his pupil was dilated, his vitreous was cloudy, his fundus was severely hemorrhaged, and some blood vessels were blocked. Finally, Mr. Liu was diagnosed with left eyeball penetrating injury and left eye endophthalmitis, and needed to be hospitalized for surgery.

Recently, Mr. Liu's condition has been controlled through intravitreal injection, vitrectomy surgery and systemic anti-infection treatment, but his vision could not be fully restored.

"Ocular perforation refers to a full-thickness wound on the wall of the eyeball caused by a sharp object, which is a high-risk cause of blindness. Ocular perforation can occur in the cornea or sclera. If a foreign body fragment penetrates the eyeball, it may remain inside the eye." Director Yan Jing reminded that once an eyeball injury occurs, you should go to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible to avoid delaying treatment and causing serious consequences. If dust-like or tiny particles fly into the eyes, do not rub your eyes with your hands to prevent the foreign body from scratching or piercing the conjunctiva or cornea. If a metal foreign body such as a nail is inserted into the eye, do not pull the foreign body out by yourself to avoid secondary injury.
