Be careful! Summer vacation is coming, parents should protect their children's eyes in this way...

It's coming It's coming

It came with summer homework

The annual summer vacation is about to begin

No more teacher supervision and parental nagging

All those TV shows that you don’t have time to watch and mobile games that you can’t play are put on your schedule.

However, the crazier the children are, the more nervous the old fathers and mothers become.

How to prevent children from experiencing vision loss during the summer vacation?

Today we have invited Cai Chunyan, a master's supervisor, associate chief physician, and deputy director of the Department of Strabismus and Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, to answer your questions.

1. Make reasonable holiday plans

There are always students who play too much during the week and then make up for their holiday homework before school starts. However, this method is not conducive to learning and vision health. Therefore, it is recommended to make a detailed holiday schedule from the beginning of the holiday, and specify holiday activities such as reading, watching TV, doing homework, playing games, outdoor activities, etc. every day, every time period, and every hour. When making a plan, you can fully consider the way you use your eyes, such as watching TV for 30 minutes and taking a 10-minute break.

2. Supervision and regulation cannot be relaxed

The longer the vacation, the more we should not relax our vigilance. Developing good eye habits can benefit you for life. For example, after using your eyes at close range (reading, writing, playing with mobile phones, etc.) for 20 minutes, you should be reminded to look far away and take a break; do not use your eyes in the wrong postures such as lying on your stomach, lying on your side, sitting crookedly, etc.; keep the room well lit, etc. In addition, parents are also role models for their children, and the correct eye posture also requires parents to follow and persist.

3. Do outdoor activities every day

Even if it is hot in summer, don't use this as an excuse to indulge your children to stay at home all the time. Ensuring more than 2 hours of outdoor sunlight exposure every day can effectively inhibit the occurrence and development of myopia. Therefore, on weekdays, you can urge your children to use the morning time for outdoor activities, arrange family parent-child activities on weekends, enrich holiday entertainment methods, and avoid being addicted to the Internet or electronic products.

4. Regular vision checks

Regular vision examinations are the prerequisite for early detection and intervention. If you have enough time during the holidays, it is recommended to take your child to a regular ophthalmology medical institution for an optometry examination to understand the state of eye refraction development and keep abreast of the child's vision and visual function development process. Once a problem is found, it is also convenient to take corresponding measures early to prevent and control the occurrence and degree of myopia.

5. Pay attention to a balanced diet

Eat less sweets, drink less beverages, and eat more foods rich in calcium and protein.

Summer vacation is a period when the refractive state of adolescents and children is prone to fluctuations, mainly due to bad eye habits and excessive eye use. Dai Hongbin, chief physician, member of the Standing Committee of the Hubei Provincial Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine Ophthalmology Committee, and director of strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology at Wuhan University Aier Eye Hospital, reminds parents and friends to strengthen supervision and cultivate scientific eye use behaviors, especially pay attention to controlling the time and frequency of using electronic products such as computers and mobile phones, and be alert to the sharp "surge" of myopia during the summer vacation.
