Beware! Insomnia may also be a disease

Did you know that insomnia is a disease, and loving to sleep can also be a disease! For example, 13-year-old girl Lili (pseudonym) was ruined in her study and life because she could fall asleep while standing!

In the past five months, her mother has discovered that Lili loves to sleep , and it is getting worse and worse, regardless of day or night. No matter how early she goes to bed, she will continue to sleep as long as she is not called in the morning. During class , as long as she is quiet, she can fall asleep in seconds .

At first, the parents thought Lili was just growing up and didn’t take it seriously. But later, it seriously affected her studies and life, and the parents realized that their child must be sick ! Lili had no choice but to take a leave of absence from school. After seeking medical treatment at several local hospitals, no one could diagnose her. The family was so worried that they rushed from Anhui to Beichen Hospital for help.

Based on the relevant examination results, Zhong Shijiang, director of the Department of Neurology, diagnosed Lili with idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) . After nearly ten days of symptomatic treatment, Lili's sleep returned to normal and she was able to go to school again.

Narcolepsy , also known as hypersomnia, is a chronic sleep disorder. It is generally manifested as excessive daytime sleepiness or feeling tired and listless despite adequate sleep. It not only affects normal life and study, but in severe cases may also lead to memory loss, confusion in thinking logic, and even induce mental illness.

Narcolepsy is divided into secondary and primary .

Secondary hypersomnia refers to sleepiness caused by mental disorders, organic brain diseases, physical diseases or drugs .

Primary hypersomnia refers to sleepiness disorder other than the above reasons. The cause is not yet fully understood. The disease often occurs in children and adolescents and may be related to congenital susceptibility genes, personality, psychological stress, irregular lifestyle and other factors.

For primary hypersomnia, drug treatment can be combined with lifestyle guidance and psychological intervention .

Beichen Hospital reminds you that once you find that your child loves to sleep and it has lasted for more than a month and affects daily life, parents should take their children to see a doctor as soon as possible for related examinations such as EEG, cranial MRI, sleep monitoring, etc. to rule out secondary narcolepsy.
