Research shows paleo and keto diets are bad for the planet. Which diet are you on?

China Science and Technology News Network, March 3 (Qin Chuan) Recently, a new study believes that both the original diet and the ketogenic diet are bad for both health and the earth. They found that for every 1,000 calories consumed, the ketogenic diet will produce nearly 3 kilograms of carbon dioxide, while the original diet will release 2.6 kilograms of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Today, the more extreme eating habits that exist can be divided into three categories: paleo, ketogenic, and vegetarian.

The Paleo diet is a way of eating based on the way early humans are believed to have eaten. It is a high-protein, high-fat, and low-carb diet. The Paleo diet was codified by Mark Sisson, a former elite athlete and health coach.

The basis of the original diet is to eat a lot of vegetables, meat, eggs, fruits and nuts, and avoid beans and grains. More protein and fat intake can make people feel fuller and reduce food intake, and naturally the weight will be lighter.

The ketogenic diet refers to a diet that is low in carbohydrates, moderate in protein, and high in fat. The purpose of the ketogenic diet is to make the human body produce a large number of ketone bodies, induce the body to enter a ketogenic state where energy is provided by fat, and allow the body's fat to provide the energy needed by the body, burning fat at a high speed.

Vegetarians avoid all animal products and animal by-products in their diet. The quietly spreading vegetarian culture has made vegetarianism increasingly a global fashion label.

Scientists tracking several types of diets found that paleo and ketogenic diets create almost four times the greenhouse gas emissions of vegetarians, while omnivores with mainstream eating habits are in the middle, with about three times the amount of vegetarians.

Climate change is arguably one of the most pressing issues of our time, but vegetarians are right behind meat-eaters in terms of nutritional value, while keto and paleo diet advocates lag behind, researchers say. There are other ways to mitigate the threat of climate change without compromising your health, without giving up meat altogether.
