Medicine Baby Quiz | Are there any particular postures for taking medicine?

Medicine Baby Analysis

For most oral medications, unless there are special requirements, the most common and scientific posture for taking medications is "standing upright" or "sitting upright".

However, some drugs have special requirements for the posture of taking medicine. For example, bisphosphonates (such as alendronate sodium, risedronate sodium, etc.) for the treatment of osteoporosis are easy to adhere to the esophageal wall, inducing esophageal inflammation, erosion, and ulcers. In order to deliver the drug to the stomach as quickly as possible, it must be taken in an "upright" posture, and the upper body must be kept upright for more than 30 minutes after taking the medicine, avoiding lying down, so as to reduce the retention of the drug in the esophagus and reduce the probability of esophageal ulcers. When taking "nitroglycerin tablets" sublingually to relieve angina pectoris, you should sit down.

This posture can reduce the amount of blood returning to the heart, reduce myocardial oxygen consumption, help relieve angina pectoris quickly, and avoid the risk of fainting due to postural hypotension. When taking drugs such as "prazosin and terazosin" that are prone to orthostatic hypotension, it is best to take a semi-recumbent position, or lie down for a while after taking the medicine in a sitting position.

When taking gastric mucosal protective agents such as "aluminum phosphate gel, aluminum hydroxide gel, sucralfate" for gastric ulcer, the drug's contact time with the ulcer surface is short when standing, and the drug's efficacy is difficult to fully exert, so you should lie still for 10-30 minutes after taking the medicine.
