Can diabetic retinopathy be prevented?

It cannot be completely prevented. Even if blood sugar is kept stable and other indicators are normal, it cannot completely prevent the occurrence and development of diabetic retinopathy. It can only delay the development of the disease and protect vision. The usual saying is to do repairs and maintenance to make the eyes last longer.

What are the ways to prevent diabetic retinopathy?

The prevention methods of diabetic retinopathy can be summarized as "3314"

Three controls: control blood sugar, control blood pressure, and control blood lipids;

Three taboos: quit smoking, quit drinking, and quit overeating;

A regular fundus examination: fundus examination with mydriasis or fundus camera without mydriasis;

Four early intervention and treatment

Give drugs to improve microcirculation in the early stage;

If there is no perfusion area in angiography, laser treatment intervention should be given early;

If there is macular edema, anti-angiogenic drugs should be given early;

If there is vitreous hemorrhage or retinal detachment, early surgical treatment is required.

How often should people with diabetes visit an eye doctor for an eye exam?

Once diabetes is discovered, you should go to a specialist hospital for a fundus examination immediately. If there is no fundus lesion, the fundus should be examined at least once a year. If there is neovascularization, panretinal photocoagulation is required, and then the fundus should be examined every 3-6 months, fundus photography should be taken, and OCT+FFA (fundus fluorescein angiography) should be checked if necessary, or as directed by a doctor.

What kind of people are prone to diabetic retinopathy?

Anyone with diabetes. All people with diabetes, both type 1 and type 2, are at risk for developing diabetic retinopathy. The longer you have diabetes, the greater your chances of developing diabetic retinopathy. Almost half of people with diabetes will develop some degree of diabetic retinopathy during their illness. During pregnancy, diabetic retinopathy is a major problem for women with diabetes. It is recommended that all women with gestational diabetes have a dilated eye exam every 3 months to protect their vision.

Treatment of diabetic retinopathy:

Drug treatment: delay the occurrence of lesions;

Laser treatment: prevents further development of lesions;

Intraocular injection: control macular edema and improve vision;

Surgical treatment: remove lesions and save vision.
