In winter, beware of "snow blindness"! Ski lovers, please pay attention~

Winter is the peak season for snow blindness. Snow blindness, also known as "electric eye conjunctivitis" and "ultraviolet eye conjunctivitis", is an acute light-induced eye disease caused by damage to the cornea and conjunctival epithelium by ultraviolet rays.

Snow blindness can cause eye pain, photophobia, foreign body sensation, tearing, etc. In severe cases, diffuse corneal epithelial detachment may occur, causing temporary blindness. For outdoor sports enthusiasts, how can we effectively prevent snow blindness?

Snow blindness is caused by the high reflectivity of snow to sunlight.

When doing outdoor sports in winter, we can protect our eyes by wearing sunglasses or colored protective glasses to reduce the incidence of snow blindness. When choosing protective glasses, we should try to choose products with words such as "100% UV protection", "UV400", "UV protection" on the outer packaging.

At the same time, when playing in the snow, you should not stay for a long time and should control the time appropriately. Once you feel discomfort in your eyes, you should change the environment in time, stay away from light sources, use eye masks or cold towels to cool your eyes to relieve the symptoms of conjunctival congestion, and close your eyes to rest. Generally speaking, most people's snow blindness symptoms can be relieved or cured within 24-48 hours. Dr. Li Kuanshu reminded that for patients with severe snow blindness symptoms or those who have not been relieved by the above measures, they should go to a professional ophthalmology hospital in time and receive treatment under the guidance of a doctor.
