As an industry built on innovation and progress, the mobile communications industry is always looking for the "next big thing." In the past, there have been many candidates. From virtual reality (VR) to foldable devices to the metaverse, they have come and gone with varying degrees of success. But is there any “next big thing” comparable to artificial intelligence (AI)? It can be said that AI is sweeping the world, promising to transform almost every vertical industry. The trigger for this trend is undoubtedly the new "flavor" of AI, generative AI. Large language tools like ChatGPT and Claude reveal that AI is not only capable of detecting patterns and learning skills, but also generating original content. In doing so, they have pushed generative AI technology into the mainstream. In fact, the enthusiasm has reached such a level that, according to PwC’s Global Artificial Intelligence Study, AI is expected to add $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. Back in 2017, the GSMA brought together mobile operators and partners to create an "AI for Impact" initiative, which works with private and public sector organizations to leverage big data for social benefit and ensure that the mobile industry deploys AI responsibly. But it’s undeniable that something has changed in the past two years. The technology now dominates the discussion, driving AI chip designer Nvidia’s market value to $3.3 trillion and giving the most prominent AI startup, Open AI, a valuation of $157 billion. In the mobile communications industry, analysts have been busy calculating the impact that a new wave of AI innovations could have. McKinsey, for example, believes that widespread use of the technology in the telecom industry could lead to revenue growth of $680 billion over the next 15 to 20 years. New AI processes are different from traditional rule-based and deterministic algorithms. True AI should include significant elements of learning from training data in order to make decisions and perform cognitive functions.
