Ericsson: November 2024 Mobility Report

Ericsson has released its "November 2024 Mobile Report". 5G users are growing, and by the end of 2024, 1 in 4 mobile users are expected to be 5G users. This momentum will continue during the forecast period, and 5G is expected to surpass 4G for the first time in 2027 to become the dominant mobile access technology. Although 5G population coverage continues to grow globally, 5G mid-band has only been deployed in about 30% of all sites worldwide outside mainland China; in order to fully utilize the full potential of 5G, further densification of mid-band sites and deployment of standalone 5G (SA) are needed.

By 2030, the number of 5G users worldwide will reach around 6.3 billion, accounting for 67% of the total mobile users.

It is expected that by the end of 2030, 5G will carry 80% of total mobile data traffic.

It is estimated that by 2030, the number of 5G SA users will reach around 3.6 billion.

Following the launch of 5G SA and 5G Advanced, 6G is expected to arrive in 2030.

By the end of 2024, 5G mid-band population coverage outside mainland China is expected to reach 40%.

In the third quarter of 2024, the number of 5G users increased by approximately 160 million, reaching a total of 2.1 billion.

GenAI is leading the future of smartphones

Smartphone sales are increasing and are expected to show year-on-year growth after three years of decline. Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is driving growth in the high-end segment, and new growth is expected in the low-end segment due to attractive models.

In India, 5G user penetration is expected to double by 2024, reaching 23% penetration by the end of this year.

In mainland China, commercial deployment of 5G Advanced has already begun. Initial features include reduced functionality (RedCap) and high-order carrier aggregation to support upcoming use cases including 5G and artificial intelligence, drones, and XR.
