Which APP consumes the most power and takes up the most storage space? A survey of 100 popular APPs

Smartphones have become the gateway to various services, and users only need to install the corresponding APP to enjoy the services. However, while these APPs bring a lot of convenience to our daily lives, they also consume a lot of electricity, making it easier for mobile phones to run out of power.

A study shows that 93% of smartphone users use at least one app every day, which often results in the phone not being able to last a whole day. So which apps consume the most power? Foreign technology website pcloud analyzed the 100 most popular apps, scoring them mainly from three aspects, trying to find the most power-consuming "mobile killer apps."

The final results show that Fitbit and Verizon top the list in terms of battery consumption. The two apps allow 14 of the 16 available functions to run in the background, especially including the four most demanding functions: camera, location, microphone and Wifi connection. The two apps won the highest score in the study – 92.31%.

Social media apps make up a total of 6 of the top 20 apps that put the most demands on your phone’s battery. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Youtube, WhatsApp and Linkedin allow 11 additional features to run in the background, such as photos, wifi, location and microphone. All of these require more power to run and ultimately place more demands on your phone and its battery.

Additionally, of the six social media apps, only Instagram allows for dark mode, which can save up to 30% of your phone’s battery life. The only other social media app that allows this feature is Twitter – which probably explains why it didn’t make the top 20.

In addition, the analysis found that dating apps are also major battery hogs. Online dating apps such as Tinder, Bumble, and Grinder account for 15% of the major battery hogs, allowing an average of 11 features to run in the background. All three dating apps do not have a dark mode available, so they require more energy when in use, causing the battery to drain faster.

The average phone can hold 64GB of built-in storage, with the operating system taking up about 10GB. To take into account how much storage space apps require, pCloud looked at 100 of the top apps and collected how many MB of space each one takes.

The United Airlines app took up the most storage space on your phone, requiring 437.8MB of space, followed by the Lyft app at 325.1MB and Uber at 299.6MB. All of these apps require plenty of space, so they can slow down your phone and eat into your storage space.

Fortunately, travel apps like United Airlines shouldn’t be opened when you’re not on vacation and should be the first thing to delete when considering how to free up storage space on your phone. Also, other airlines like Ryanair only require 109.2MB of storage space and Jet2 requires 47.3MB of storage space, which are two alternative airline apps you can use.

However, apps like Lyft and Uber are more of a necessity when it comes to having convenient transportation on a daily basis. Instead of deleting both of them, make sure you keep only one reliable transportation app, thus making room for other apps and making your phone run faster.

However, the video conferencing app requires 232.2MB of space, compared to Zoom's 82.1MB and Skype's 111.2MB. These simple alternatives can help reduce your phone's free space and will also help keep your phone running smoothly.

Uber Eats, My Mcdonalds, and Yelp Food all made it into the top 30 apps that take up your storage space. To reduce the amount of storage space used while also increasing your phone's speed, try sticking with just one food delivery app. Many food delivery apps feature the same or similar restaurants, so one should be enough or meet most people's needs.
