MediaCom: Connected Kids Report 2019

MediaCom released its 2019 Connected Kids Report, which surveyed 1,200 teens aged 8-19. Amid growing concerns about the negative effects of social media, teens appear to be taking the lead in reducing their online time and even deleting the apps they are most concerned about. The survey found that half of teens said they spent too much time interacting with friends on social media, and nearly 20% had deleted social media apps.

About 40% of teens say they often compare themselves to others on social media, and another third (36%) worry about receiving negative or hurtful comments. In comparison, only 24% of adults care about how many likes their posts get.

Even so, many social media experiences are addictive, with more than half of respondents (52%) saying they need to constantly check for updates.

Those who are concerned about social media are doing more about it, with 18% of teens having deleted some social media apps and 17% reducing their screen time.

Despite concerns about the negative effects of online interaction, British teenagers still believe that online interaction has many positive effects. More than half of respondents (59%) believe that social media helps them avoid missing out on games, and 47% of teenagers say that using social media makes them feel included.

Young people have a complex relationship with social media. It can help teens connect with friends and family, but the pressures of this lifestyle can also be great.

According to the NHS, mental health problems among children and teenagers are on the rise, and there is growing evidence that social media is playing a role. Many teenagers may use social platforms in a positive way, but we can’t ignore the damage that can be done online.
