SuperData: 2018 XR (Mixed Reality) Industry Survey Report

According to a new report released by VR Intelligence and SuperData, "2018 XR (Mixed Reality) Industry Survey", virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) solutions are growing faster in the enterprise than consumers. However, the survey of 595 VR and AR professionals from different functional departments across the industry found that consumption growth in many enterprises is weaker than expected.

This was particularly true for VR, with 42% of respondents categorizing growth as “weaker than expected,” with only 25% viewing growth as strong (18%) or very strong (7%).

In contrast, the XR Industry Survey found that respondents were more likely to describe it as stronger than expected (38%) than weaker (33%).

The good news is that the results for AR were more encouraging, with 43% of respondents reporting “strong growth” in their enterprise business, while 30% were disappointed with the pace of growth.

But even with AR, progress on the consumer side has not been as fast as many expected, with more respondents saying their consumer AR business growth is weaker than expected (36%), and only 31% of professionals believe that consumer AR business growth is strong (31%). Because of this, companies are more inclined to prioritize enterprise VR and AR applications rather than consumers.

Looking ahead, most professionals believe that it will take at least three years for VR (68%) and AR (54%) applications to become mainstream. The main barriers to overcome continue to revolve around a lack of content and the high price of head-mounted displays. These concerns remain the same as last year, although they have eased somewhat.

So while VR has consumer applications ranging from advertising to video watching and shopping, it may be some time before they are widely used.
