Digi-Capital: AR/VR startups received $300 million in investment in the third quarter of 2017

According to the latest data from Digi-Capital, in the 12 months ending in the third quarter of 2017, 27 AR/VR investments received a total of $1.8 billion in funding, with $300 million raised in the third quarter. In the second quarter, AR/VR received $800 million in investment, mainly due to two large investments. The trend worth noting in the third quarter is that VR was previously the driving force of investment, but now it is shifting to mobile AR investment.

Of the 27 AR/VR investments, 4 out of every 10 dollars were contributed by technology, 1/10 by games, and 1/10 by images and videos. Smart glasses, peripherals, social and entertainment also accounted for a certain amount of investment. Education, solutions and services, advertising and marketing, e-commerce, VR helmets, navigation, lifestyle, art and design, business, news, medical, B2B, music, travel and transportation, utilities, sports, distribution, children and productivity also accounted for a smaller share of investment.

Weak VR investment in the first half of 2017 led to a decline in active investors in AR/VR, but the opposite was true for mobile AR.

It is expected that by the end of 2018, ARKit, ARCore and Camera Effects will have more than 900 million installations, which will bring considerable revenue to mobile AR startups. This means that venture capital and corporate investors need to be realistic about the early stage of the mobile AR market and wait patiently for startups to develop into the mainstream market.
