Ooyala: 2017 Q2 Global Video Index Report

Ooyala released the "Global Video Index for the Second Quarter of 2017". Overall, the growth of mobile video viewership stagnated, increasing by less than 1%.

After 22 quarters of rapid double-digit growth, mobile video grew just 0.4% in the second quarter of 2017, accounting for 56.7% of video viewing. Smartphone video viewing declined slightly, while tablets grew to an all-time high (10.6%).

In North America, mobile video accounts for less than 50% of video viewing, but in Asia Pacific, it has reached a record high, with 72% of viewing coming from mobile devices. Mobile video viewing continues to grow in EMEA (57.7%) and Latin America (56%).

With the release of new iPhones and Galaxy devices, Ooyala expects mobile video share to reach 60% by the end of this year.

The Q2 Video Index also shows a growing preference for long-form video content (20 minutes or longer).

Smartphones, tablets, PCs and connected TVs all account for more than 50% of long video viewing time. Long videos account for 53% of video viewing time on smartphones and PCs, 82% of video viewing time on tablets, and almost all TV viewing is long videos (96%).

The longest video watched on average across tablets, PCs and smartphones was 44 minutes, about the length of a TV episode. Broken down by device, the longest video watched on smartphones was 38.5 minutes, while the longest video watched on PCs was 25.3 minutes.

Meanwhile, short videos (0-5 minutes) had roughly the same share of viewership on PCs (35%) and smartphones (36%), although they had a higher share of smartphone viewership (55%) last year.

The demand for OTT content is growing rapidly. Netflix and Amazon continue to invest in content production, with Netflix releasing 126 video content this year.
