Digi-Capital: AR/VR investment reached $1.1 billion in 2016

Augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) investment reached $1.1 billion in the first two months of 2016. This is the first time that annual investment in AR/VR has exceeded $1 billion, not to mention that it only took two months, which is an amazing growth rate compared to the $700 million investment in 2015.

Magic Leap alone received $800 million in investment, while AR/VR solutions and services, VR hardware, advertising and marketing, distribution, video, peripherals, applications and games contributed $300 million. Even excluding Magic Leap, AR/VR investment in Q1 2016 has increased by 20% compared to Q4 2015 ($250 million), not to mention that there are still 4 weeks left until the end of Q1.

Currently, AR/VR investments in 2016 mainly include:

• Mindmaze received $100 million in investment, with a market value of $1 billion, becoming the fourth AR/VR unicorn (Magic Leap, Oculus and Blippar);
• Blippar received $54 million in investment and its market value reached $1.5 billion in 2015;
• WEVR received $25 million in investment.

Currently, AR/VR investment is concentrated in the early stages, such as Colopl's establishment of a $50 million VR fund. The $1.1 billion investment in the AR/VR industry in the first two months of 2016 does not include investment from limited partners. In other words, the AR/VR industry has received more investment than $1.1 billion.

With AR/VR expected to generate $120 billion in revenue in 2020, investors are clearly looking to the future.
