YouGov: 63% of Americans use group chats on instant messaging apps

Sharing a moment with friends and loved ones can be difficult to coordinate when everyone has different schedules. Group chat features on messaging apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and GroupMe make it easier to stay connected. New research from YouGov Omnibus shows that 63% of Americans use group text or chat features to talk with family, friends and coworkers.

Messaging has changed the speed and frequency of people communicating with each other. A new YouGov survey shows that most Americans use group chats to communicate, with 45% using group chats at least once a week, 18% accessing group chats multiple times a day (18%), 7% using them once a day and once a week, and 13% using them several times a week.

Men (49%) are more likely than women (41%) to use group chats weekly. Millennials are the most likely of all age groups to use group chats weekly (67%). Hispanics (66%) prefer group chats compared to blacks (45%) and whites (40%).

For Americans who need to stay connected with friends and family at work, group chats are an ideal way to do so. 85% of U.S. group chat users use this feature to stay connected with family and friends. Millennials (89%) and those aged 35 to 54 (85%) are most likely to rely on this method of communication.

People not only use group chats to stay connected with family and friends, but 68% of Americans use group chats for work, and 80% of millennials use group chats for work.
