comScore: One in four iPhone 5s owners plan to upgrade to iPhone 6

Fall is just around the corner, and many consumers are looking forward to the colorful falling leaves and the release of Apple's iPhone 6. A June 2014 comScore MobiLens study found that 35% of US iPhone users plan to upgrade their phones within the next six months.

Research shows that mobile phone owners generally upgrade their devices within two years, but some change more frequently. comScore found that users who own an iPhone 4 or earlier are most interested in upgrading (46%). iPhone 4 owners are second most interested in upgrading; followed by iPhone 4s owners, who are the largest group, at nearly 20 million.

Interestingly, 24% of iPhone 5s users also plan to upgrade, which comScore calls "following tech consumers," typically males aged 25 to 34. Among female iPhone 5s users, those aged 13 to 17 are more likely to plan to upgrade, and those from higher-income families and coastal areas are more likely to upgrade their devices.

According to Netbiscuits' analysis in the second quarter of 2014, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s are the world's leading mobile devices, with a market share of about 17%; iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s are in second place, about 14%; Samsung Galaxy, HTC and LG Nexus, as well as other older versions of iPhone are in third and fourth place. Samsung Galaxy III and S4 both have a market share of about 4%.
